In keeping with the ordinance of his father David, he appointed the divisions of the priests for their duties, and the Levites to lead the praise and to assist the priests according to each day’s requirement. He also appointed the gatekeepers by divisions for the various gates, because this was what David the man of God had ordered.

Solomon followed the orders his father David had given him. He appointed the groups of priests for their duties. He appointed the Levites to lead the people in praising the Lord. They also helped the priests do their required tasks each day. Solomon appointed the groups of men who guarded all the gates. That’s what David, the man of God, had ordered.

According to the ruling of David his father, he appointed the divisions of the priests for their service, and the Levites for their offices of praise and ministry before the priests as the duty of each day required, and the gatekeepers in their divisions at each gate, for so David the man of God had commanded.

In assigning the priests to their duties, Solomon followed the regulations of his father, David. He also assigned the Levites to lead the people in praise and to assist the priests in their daily duties. And he assigned the gatekeepers to their gates by their divisions, following the commands of David, the man of God.

And the porters[ were], Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, and their brethren: Shallum[ was] the chief;

And the chief of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren over against them, to praise[ and] to give thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, ward over against ward.

And his brethren, Shemaiah, and Azarael, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethaneel, and Judah, Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God, and Ezra the scribe before them.

For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

And this[ is] the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.

This[ is] the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you entering on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites,[ shall be] porters of the doors;

And these[ are they] whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had rest.And they ministered before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of the congregation with singing, until Solomon had built the house of the LORD in Jerusalem: and[ then] they waited on their office according to their order.And these[ are] they that waited with their children. There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife[ was] of the daughters of Aaron, and her name[ was] Elisabeth.

And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the[ son] of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand.Of which, twenty and four thousand[ were] to set forward the work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand[ were] officers and judges:Moreover four thousand[ were] porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made,[ said David], to praise[ therewith].And David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi,[ namely], Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.Of the Gershonites[ were], Laadan, and Shimei.The sons of Laadan; the chief[ was] Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three.The sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These[ were] the chief of the fathers of Laadan.And the sons of Shimei[ were], Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four[ were] the sons of Shimei.And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to[ their] father’s house.The sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever.Now[ concerning] Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi.The sons of Moses[ were], Gershom, and Eliezer.Of the sons of Gershom, Shebuel[ was] the chief.And the sons of Eliezer[ were], Rehabiah the chief. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish.And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them.The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.These[ were] the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers;[ even] the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward.For David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever:And also unto the Levites; they shall no[ more] carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof.For by the last words of David the Levites[ were] numbered from twenty years old and above:Because their office[ was] to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for[ that which is baked in] the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size;And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even;And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD:And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy[ place], and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.Now[ these are] the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest’s office.And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and[ thus] were they divided. These[ were] the sons of the Levites after the house of their fathers.These likewise cast lots over against their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites, even the principal fathers over against their younger brethren.Moreover David and the captains of the host separated to the service of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of the workmen according to their service was:Of the sons of Asaph; Zaccur, and Joseph, and Nethaniah, and Asarelah, the sons of Asaph under the hands of Asaph, which prophesied according to the order of the king.Of Jeduthun: the sons of Jeduthun; Gedaliah, and Zeri, and Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the hands of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with a harp, to give thanks and to praise the LORD.Of Heman: the sons of Heman; Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamtiezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir,[ and] Mahazioth:All these[ were] the sons of Heman the king’s seer in the words of God, to lift up the horn. And Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man according to his service, the priests and Levites for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, and to give thanks, and to praise in the gates of the tents of the LORD.

And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which[ is] at Jerusalem; as it is written in the book of Moses.

And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren[ to be] the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brethren, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brethren, Ethan the son of Kushaiah;And with them their brethren of the second[ degree], Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, the porters.So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan,[ were appointed] to sound with cymbals of brass;And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries on Alamoth;And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to excel.And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites,[ was] for song: he instructed about the song, because he[ was] skilful.

So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king’s commandment.

And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun[ were] porters.

And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy[ place]:( for all the priests[ that were] present were sanctified,[ and] did not[ then] wait by course:

All[ this, said David], the LORD made me understand in writing by[ his] hand upon me,[ even] all the works of this pattern.

And he appointed[ certain] of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, and to record, and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel:Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obededom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.
