“ Suppose your people go to war against their enemies. It doesn’t matter where you send them. And suppose they pray to you toward this city you have chosen. They pray toward the temple I’ve built for your Name.

“ If your people go out to battle against their enemies, by whatever way you shall send them, and they pray to you toward this city that you have chosen and the house that I have built for your name,

“ If your people go out where you send them to fight their enemies, and if they pray to you by turning toward this city you have chosen and toward this Temple I have built to honor your name,

Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.Our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend?They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary for your Name, saying,‘ If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.’“ But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them.See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an inheritance.Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the Lord.

King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer to heaven about this.And the Lord sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons, his own flesh and blood, cut him down with the sword.

When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you.When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army.He shall say:“ Hear, Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them.For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”

Then the Lord said to Joshua,“ Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack Ai. For I have delivered into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land.You shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the city.”So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at nightwith these orders:“ Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from it. All of you be on the alert.I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them.They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say,‘ They are running away from us as they did before.’ So when we flee from them,you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The Lord your God will give it into your hand.When you have taken the city, set it on fire. Do what the Lord has commanded. See to it; you have my orders.”

I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.”

“ Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”So Moses said to the people,“ Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the Lord’s vengeance on them.Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.”So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.

Zerah the Cushite marched out against them with an army of thousands upon thousands and three hundred chariots, and came as far as Mareshah.Asa went out to meet him, and they took up battle positions in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said,“ Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.”The Lord struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled,

And he sent you on a mission, saying,‘ Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’

Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”

But now I have chosen Jerusalem for my Name to be there, and I have chosen David to rule my people Israel.’

After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord,“ Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?”The Lord answered,“ Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.”

When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought,“ This is the king of Israel.” So they turned to attack him, but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord helped him. God drew them away from him,

What answer shall be given to the envoys of that nation?“ The Lord has established Zion, and in her his afflicted people will find refuge.”

“ Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them— to the Israelites.I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates— all the Hittite country— to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.

“ When your people go to war against their enemies, wherever you send them, and when they pray to the Lord toward the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name,then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.
