“ When the sky is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you; if they pray toward this place, and confess your name, and turn from their sin, when you afflict them;

如人獲罪於爾、使天閉塞、雨澤不降、至殿祈禱、呼籲爾名、緣遘患難、去厥罪愆、

如民獲罪於主、致天閉塞不雨、而在此處祈禱、主罰之之後、遂認主之名、悔改罪惡、

“ When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and when they pray toward this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them,

“ Suppose your people have sinned against you. And because of that, the sky is closed up and there isn’t any rain. But your people pray toward this place. They praise you by admitting they’ve sinned. And they turn away from their sin because you have made them suffer.

“ When heaven is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray toward this place and acknowledge your name and turn from their sin, when you afflict them,

“ If the skies are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and if they pray toward this Temple and acknowledge your name and turn from their sins because you have punished them,

“ When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and praise Your name, and turn from their sin when You afflict them,

“ The time will come when the skies are shut up tightly and no rain falls because your people sinned against you. When they direct their prayers toward this place, renew their allegiance to you, and turn away from their sin because you punish them,

and Yahweh’s anger be kindled against you, and he shut up the sky so that there is no rain, and the land doesn’t yield its fruit; and you perish quickly from off the good land which Yahweh gives you.

I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your sky like iron, and your soil like bronze.

Your sky that is over your head will be bronze, and the earth that is under you will be iron.

I will go and return to my place, until they acknowledge their offense, and seek my face. In their affliction they will seek me earnestly.”“ Come! Let’s return to Yahweh; for he has torn us to pieces, and he will heal us; he has injured us, and he will bind up our wounds.

Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive.Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live. He shall not die.Yet the house of Israel says,‘ The way of the Lord is not fair.’ House of Israel, aren’t my ways fair? Aren’t your ways unfair?“ Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways,” says the Lord Yahweh.“ Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity will not be your ruin.Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel?For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies,” says the Lord Yahweh.“ Therefore turn yourselves, and live!

Elijah the Tishbite, who was one of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab,“ As Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.”Then Yahweh’s word came to him, saying,“ Go away from here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.You shall drink from the brook. I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”So he went and did according to Yahweh’s word; for he went and lived by the brook Cherith that is before the Jordan.The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.After a while, the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.Yahweh’s word came to him, saying,“ Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you.”So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her, and said,“ Please get me a little water in a jar, that I may drink.”As she was going to get it, he called to her, and said,“ Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”She said,“ As Yahweh your God lives, I don’t have a cake, but a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jar. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”Elijah said to her,“ Don’t be afraid. Go and do as you have said; but make me a little cake from it first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son.For Yahweh, the God of Israel says,‘ The jar of meal will not run out, and the jar of oil will not fail, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the earth.’”She went and did according to the saying of Elijah; and she, and he, and her house, ate many days.The jar of meal didn’t run out, and the jar of oil didn’t fail, according to Yahweh’s word, which he spoke by Elijah.After these things, the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.She said to Elijah,“ What have I to do with you, you man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son!”

When he was in distress, he begged Yahweh his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers.He prayed to him; and he was entreated by him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that Yahweh was God.

Put on sackcloth and mourn, you priests! Wail, you ministers of the altar. Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God, for the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from your God’s house.Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders, and all the inhabitants of the land, to the house of Yahweh, your God, and cry to Yahweh.Alas for the day! For the day of Yahweh is at hand, and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.Isn’t the food cut off before our eyes; joy and gladness from the house of our God?The seeds rot under their clods. The granaries are laid desolate. The barns are broken down, for the grain has withered.How the animals groan! The herds of livestock are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.Yahweh, I cry to you, For the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field.Yes, the animals of the field pant to you, for the water brooks have dried up, And the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

I will lay it a wasteland. It won’t be pruned or hoed, but it will grow briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain on it.”

But truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land.

“ Son of man, when a land sins against me by committing a trespass, and I stretch out my hand on it, and break the staff of its bread, and send famine on it, and cut off from it man and animal;

“ Go to Bethel, and sin; to Gilgal, and sin more. Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three days,offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened, and proclaim free will offerings and brag about them: for this pleases you, you children of Israel,” says the Lord Yahweh.“ I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in every town; yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.“ I also have withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest; and I caused it to rain on one city, and caused it not to rain on another city. One place was rained on, and the piece where it didn’t rain withered.So two or three cities staggered to one city to drink water, and were not satisfied: yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.“ I struck you with blight and mildew many times in your gardens and your vineyards; and the swarming locusts have devoured your fig trees and your olive trees; yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.

He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

These have the power to shut up the sky, that it may not rain during the days of their prophecy. They have power over the waters, to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire.

This is Yahweh’s word that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought.“ Judah mourns, and its gates languish. They sit in black on the ground. The cry of Jerusalem goes up.Their nobles send their little ones to the waters. They come to the cisterns, and find no water. They return with their vessels empty. They are disappointed and confounded, and cover their heads.Because of the ground which is cracked, because no rain has been in the land, the plowmen are disappointed. They cover their heads.Yes, the doe in the field also calves and forsakes her young, because there is no grass.The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights. They pant for air like jackals. Their eyes fail, because there is no vegetation.Though our iniquities testify against us, work for your name’s sake, Yahweh; for our rebellions are many. We have sinned against you.You hope of Israel, its Savior in the time of trouble, why should you be as a foreigner in the land, and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night?Why should you be like a scared man, as a mighty man who can’t save? Yet you, Yahweh, are in the middle of us, and we are called by your name. Don’t leave us.

Yahweh says,“ Where is the bill of your mother’s divorce, with which I have put her away? Or to which of my creditors have I sold you? Behold, you were sold for your iniquities, and your mother was put away for your transgressions.Why, when I came, was there no one? When I called, why was there no one to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it can’t redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea. I make the rivers a wilderness. Their fish stink because there is no water, and die of thirst.

Blow the trumpet in Zion! Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly.Gather the people. Sanctify the assembly. Assemble the elders. Gather the children, and those who nurse from breasts. Let the bridegroom go out of his room, and the bride out of her room.Let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say,“ Spare your people, Yahweh, and don’t give your heritage to reproach, that the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples,‘ Where is their God?’”
