耶和华的怒气向他的百姓发作，他憎恶自己的产业，将他们交在外邦人手里，恨他们的人就辖制他们。他们的仇敌欺压他们，他们伏在敌人手下。他屡次搭救他们，他们却图谋悖逆，就因自己的罪孽降为卑下。然而，他听见他们哀告的时候，就眷顾他们的急难，为了他们，他记念自己的约，照他丰盛的慈爱改变心意，使他们在凡掳掠他们的人面前蒙怜悯。耶和华—我们的神啊，求你拯救我们，从列国中召集我们，我们好颂扬你的圣名，以赞美你为夸胜。

我起誓应许给亚伯拉罕、以撒、雅各的地，我要领你们进去，将那地赐给你们为业。我是耶和华。’”

波斯王居鲁士元年，耶和华为要应验藉耶利米的口所说的话，就激发波斯王居鲁士的心，使他下诏书通告全国，说：“波斯王居鲁士如此说：耶和华天上的神已将地上万国赐给我，又委派我在犹大的耶路撒冷为他建造殿宇。你们中间凡作他子民的，可以上犹大的耶路撒冷去，重建耶和华—以色列神的殿，他是在耶路撒冷的神；愿神与这人同在。凡存留的人，无论寄居何处，那地的人要用金银、财物、牲畜帮助他，还要为耶路撒冷神的殿甘心献上礼物。”于是，犹大和便雅悯的族长、祭司、利未人，凡是心被神感动的人都起来，要上耶路撒冷去建造耶和华的殿。四围所有的人都拿银器、金子、财物、牲畜、珍宝支持他们，此外还有甘心献的一切礼物。
