因此永恆主向他的人民發怒，厭惡了他的產業。把他們交於外國人手裏，恨惡他們的人就管轄他們。他們的仇敵壓迫他們，他們就在敵人手下被制伏了。永恆主多次援救了他們，他們卻計謀着悖逆，就因他們自己的罪罰而被降低。然而他聽見了他們的喊求時，就看到他們於急難中。於是他為了他們的緣故就記起他的約，照他堅愛之豐盛而後悔；使他們在一切擄了他們、的人面前蒙憐憫。永恆主我們的上帝啊，拯救我們，招集我們脫離列國哦，我們好稱讚你的聖名，以讚頌你為誇勝。

我舉手起誓應許、給亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各的地、我必領你們進去，將那地賜給你們為基業：我永恆主。」』

波斯王古列元年、永恆主為要成就他自己的話、從耶利米口中說出來的，永恆主就激動了波斯王古列的心，使他將布告傳達全國，並且用書面傳達說：『波斯王古列這麼說：「永恆主天上的上帝已將地上萬國都賜給我，是他委派了我在猶大的耶路撒冷、為他建殿。你們中間凡做他子民的都可以上猶大的耶路撒冷——願他的上帝與他同在——去建造永恆主以色列之上帝的殿：只有他是上帝；他在耶路撒冷。凡剩下的餘民、無論寄居在甚麼地方，那地方的人都要用金銀財物牲口同自願獻的禮物支助他：禮物是要為那在耶路撒冷之上帝的殿而奉獻的。」』於是猶大和便雅憫父系的族長、祭司和利未人、凡心被上帝激動的、都起來，要上去重建在耶路撒冷之永恆主的殿。他們四圍的眾人就用銀器、金子、財物、牲口、寶貴之物、來加強他們的手；另外還有各樣自願獻的禮物。
