所以耶和華的怒氣向他的子民發作；他厭惡自己的產業，把他們交在外族人的手裡，恨惡他們的人就管轄他們。他們的仇敵壓迫他們，他們就屈服在仇敵的手下。神曾多次搭救他們，他們卻故意悖逆，以致因自己的罪孽降為卑微。可是他聽到了他們哀叫的時候，就垂顧他們的苦難。他為他們的緣故記念他自己的約，照著他豐盛的慈愛回心轉意。他又使他們在所有擄掠他們的人面前，得蒙憐恤。耶和華我們的神啊！求你拯救我們，把我們從萬國中招聚回來，我們好稱謝你的聖名，以讚美你為誇耀。

我舉手起誓要給亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各的地，我必領你們進去；我也必把那地賜給你們作產業；我是耶和華。’”

波斯王古列元年，耶和華為要應驗他藉耶利米的口所說的話，就激動波斯王古列的心靈，使他通令全國，傳達文告說：“波斯王古列這樣說：‘耶和華天上的神已經把地上萬國賜給我。他指派我在猶大的耶路撒冷為他建造殿宇。你們中間凡是他的子民，願神與他同在的，都可以上猶大的耶路撒冷去，建造耶和華以色列的神的殿，他是在耶路撒冷受敬拜的神。所有餘民，無論寄居在甚麼地方，那地方的人都要用金、銀、財物、牲畜幫助他，也要為在耶路撒冷神的殿獻上甘心的禮物。’”於是，猶大和便雅憫的族長、祭司、利未人和所有被神激動了心靈的人，都起來要上去，重建在耶路撒冷耶和華的殿。他們四圍的人都用銀器、金子、財物、牲畜和珍貴的禮物協助他們，另外還有各種甘心奉獻的禮物。
