所以耶和华的怒气向他的子民发作；他厌恶自己的产业，把他们交在外族人的手里，恨恶他们的人就管辖他们。他们的仇敌压迫他们，他们就屈服在仇敌的手下。神曾多次搭救他们，他们却故意悖逆，以致因自己的罪孽降为卑微。可是他听到了他们哀叫的时候，就垂顾他们的苦难。他为他们的缘故记念他自己的约，照着他丰盛的慈爱回心转意。他又使他们在所有掳掠他们的人面前，得蒙怜恤。耶和华我们的神啊！求你拯救我们，把我们从万国中招聚回来，我们好称谢你的圣名，以赞美你为夸耀。

我举手起誓要给亚伯拉罕、以撒、雅各的地，我必领你们进去；我也必把那地赐给你们作产业；我是耶和华。’”

波斯王古列元年，耶和华为要应验他藉耶利米的口所说的话，就激动波斯王古列的心灵，使他通令全国，传达文告说：“波斯王古列这样说：‘耶和华天上的神已经把地上万国赐给我。他指派我在犹大的耶路撒冷为他建造殿宇。你们中间凡是他的子民，愿神与他同在的，都可以上犹大的耶路撒冷去，建造耶和华以色列的神的殿，他是在耶路撒冷受敬拜的神。所有余民，无论寄居在什么地方，那地方的人都要用金、银、财物、牲畜帮助他，也要为在耶路撒冷神的殿献上甘心的礼物。’”于是，犹大和便雅悯的族长、祭司、利未人和所有被神激动了心灵的人，都起来要上去，重建在耶路撒冷耶和华的殿。他们四围的人都用银器、金子、财物、牲畜和珍贵的礼物协助他们，另外还有各种甘心奉献的礼物。
