約西亞王十八年、王差遣米書蘭的孫子、亞薩利的兒子、祕書沙番、上永恆主的殿，吩咐他說：『你上去見大祭司希勒家，叫他將人所奉到永恆主之殿的銀子、就是把守門檻的人從人民中收集的銀子、總算一算，交在辦事的人、在永恆主的殿裏監工的人、手裏，好讓他們交給在永恆主殿裏作工的人，去修理聖殿破壞的地方；交給木匠和建築的人、跟土匠；又買木料和鑿成的石頭，來修理殿。不過銀子交在辦事人手裏、並不必跟他們算賬，因為他們作事忠實可靠。』大祭司希勒家對祕書沙番說：『我在永恆主殿裏發現了《律法書》。』希勒家將書遞給祕書沙番，沙番就唸它。祕書沙番去見王，向王回話，說：『僕人已將殿裏所有的銀子都倒出來，交在辦事的人、永恆主殿裏監工的人、手裏了。』祕書沙番又告訴王說：『祭司希勒家遞給了我一卷書。』沙番就在王面前唸它。王聽見《律法書》上的話，便撕裂衣服。王就吩咐希勒家祭司、和沙番的兒子亞希甘、米該亞的兒子亞革波、祕書沙番、和王的臣僕亞撒雅，說：『你們去，為我、為人民、為猶大眾人、將所發現這一卷書上的話尋問永恆主；因為我們列祖沒有聽從這書上的話，沒有遵行、照這一切所寫關於我們的事，以致永恆主向我們大發烈怒。』於是希勒家祭司、和亞希甘、亞革波、沙番、亞撒雅、去見女神言人戶勒大；戶勒大是掌管禮服的沙龍的妻子；沙龍是哈珥哈斯的孫子，特瓦的兒子；戶勒大住在耶路撒冷第二區；他們就和她說。她對他們說：『永恆主以色列的上帝這麼說：「你們要對那差遣你們來見我的人說：永恆主這麼說：看吧，我必照猶大王所唸那書上的一切話降災禍於這地和這地的居民。因為他們離棄了我，向別的神燻祭，好用他們手所作的一切事來惹我發怒，故此我必向這地發怒火，總不熄滅。至於差遣你們來尋問永恆主的那猶大王、你們要這樣對他說：永恆主以色列的上帝這麼說：論到你所聽見的話，你一聽見我指着這地方和這地方的居民所說的話說，要使這地成了令人驚駭、令人咒詛的對象，你的心便軟了下來，你就在我永恆主面前自己謙卑，又撕裂了衣服，又在我面前哭，因此我也垂聽你的禱告；這是永恆主發神諭說的。所以你看吧，我必將你收殮歸你列祖；使你安安然然被收殮歸入墳墓。我所要降於這地方的一切災禍、你也不至於親眼看到。」』聽完了之後，他們就將這話回覆了王。

以色列王說：『將米該雅帶回去交給市長亞們和王的兒子約阿施，說：

他們打發了人去，將耶利米從護衛監的院子提出來，交與沙番的孫子亞希甘的兒子基大利，使他帶出去到家裏。於是耶利米就住在人民中間。

雖然如此，沙番的兒子亞希甘的手卻保護着耶利米，以致沒有人把耶利米交在人民手中去處死他。

萬軍之永恆主以色列之上帝論哥賴雅的兒子亞哈和瑪西雅的兒子西底家是這麼說的：「他們是冒我名以虛假傳神言的；看吧，我必將他們交在巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒手中，他必在你們眼前擊殺他們。

還有那些在摩押地、在亞捫人中間、在以東地和各國之地的一切猶大人、一聽見巴比倫王給猶大留下些餘剩之民，並且立了沙番的孫子亞希甘的兒子基大利做總督來管理他們，

西底家王打發了瑪基雅的兒子巴施戶珥和祭司瑪西雅的兒子西番雅去見耶利米，說：

當猶大王亞們的兒子約西亞的日子，他執政的十三年那時候，永恆主的話傳與耶利米。當猶大王約西亞的兒子約雅敬的日子，直到猶大王約西亞的兒子西底家十一年年底，直到五月間耶路撒冷人流亡的時候，永恆主的話都常常傳與耶利米。

『萬軍之永恆主以色列之上帝這麼說：你曾用自己的名寄信給在耶路撒冷的眾民，給祭司瑪西雅的兒子西番雅、和眾祭司說：

巴錄就在永恆主之殿的上院、永恆主之殿的新門口、沙番的兒子祕書基瑪利雅的廂房中、把書上耶利米的話念給眾民聽。
