那时，众百姓如同一人聚集在水门前的广场，请以斯拉文士将耶和华吩咐以色列的摩西的律法书带来。七月初一，以斯拉祭司将律法书带到听了能明白的男女会众面前。他在水门前的广场，从清早到中午，在男女和能明白的人面前读这律法书，众百姓都侧耳而听。以斯拉文士站在为这事特制的木台上。站在他旁边的有玛他提雅、示玛、亚奈雅、乌利亚和希勒家；站在他右边的有玛西雅；站在他左边的有毗大雅、米沙利、玛基雅、哈顺、哈拔大拿、撒迦利亚和米书兰。以斯拉站在上面，在众百姓眼前展开这书。他一展开，众百姓都站起来。

他作王第三年，差遣官员便‧亥伊勒、俄巴底、撒迦利雅、拿坦业、米该亚往犹大各城去教导百姓。跟他们一同去的有利未人示玛雅、尼探雅、西巴第雅、亚撒黑、示米拉末、约拿单、亚多尼雅、多比雅、驼‧巴多尼雅；跟他们一同的又有以利沙玛和约兰二位祭司。他们在犹大教导，带着耶和华的律法书，走遍犹大各城教导百姓。

再者，传道者因有智慧，将知识教导众人；他思量，考察，并列举出许多箴言。传道者专心寻求可喜悦的言语，是凭正直写的诚实话。

大的小的都在那里，奴仆脱离主人得自由。

那时，所罗门说：“耶和华曾说要住在幽暗之处。我为你建了一座雄伟的殿宇，作为你永远居住的地方。”王转过脸来为以色列全会众祝福，以色列全会众都站立。所罗门说：“耶和华—以色列的上帝是应当称颂的！因他亲口向我父大卫应许的，也亲手成就了；他曾说：‘自从那日我领我百姓出埃及地以来，我未曾在以色列各支派中选择一城，在那里为我的名建造殿宇，也未曾拣选一人作我百姓以色列的君王。但我选择耶路撒冷，使我的名留在那里，又拣选大卫治理我的百姓以色列。’我父大卫的心意是要为耶和华—以色列上帝的名建殿。耶和华却对我父大卫说：‘你有心为我的名建殿，这心意是好的；但你不可建殿，惟有你亲生的儿子才可为我的名建殿。’现在耶和华实现了他所应许的话，使我接续我父大卫坐以色列的王位，正如耶和华所说的，我也为耶和华—以色列上帝的名建造了这殿。我将约柜安置在那里，柜内有耶和华的约，就是他与以色列人所立的约。”

沙番书记又向王报告说：“希勒家祭司递给我一卷书。”沙番就在王面前朗读那书。王听见律法的话，就撕裂衣服。

审判的时候不可看人的情面；无论大小，你们都要听讼。不可因人而惧怕，因为审判是上帝的事。你们当中若有难断的案件，可以呈到我这里，让我来听讼。’

王吩咐众百姓说：“你们当照这约书上所写的，向耶和华—你们的上帝守逾越节。”

亚兰王吩咐他的战车长说：“你们不要与他们的大将或小兵交战，只要单单攻击以色列王。”

耶和华如此说：看哪，我必照着在犹大王面前所读那书上记载的一切诅咒，降祸于这地方和其上的居民。
