那時，眾百姓如同一人聚集在水門前的廣場，請以斯拉文士將耶和華吩咐以色列的摩西的律法書帶來。七月初一，以斯拉祭司將律法書帶到聽了能明白的男女會眾面前。他在水門前的廣場，從清早到中午，在男女和能明白的人面前讀這律法書，眾百姓都側耳而聽。以斯拉文士站在為這事特製的木臺上。站在他旁邊的有瑪他提雅、示瑪、亞奈雅、烏利亞和希勒家；站在他右邊的有瑪西雅；站在他左邊的有毗大雅、米沙利、瑪基雅、哈順、哈拔大拿、撒迦利亞和米書蘭。以斯拉站在上面，在眾百姓眼前展開這書。他一展開，眾百姓都站起來。

他作王第三年，差遣官員便‧亥伊勒、俄巴底、撒迦利雅、拿坦業、米該亞往猶大各城去教導百姓。跟他們一同去的有利未人示瑪雅、尼探雅、西巴第雅、亞撒黑、示米拉末、約拿單、亞多尼雅、多比雅、駝‧巴多尼雅；跟他們一同的又有以利沙瑪和約蘭二位祭司。他們在猶大教導，帶着耶和華的律法書，走遍猶大各城教導百姓。

再者，傳道者因有智慧，將知識教導眾人；他思量，考察，並列舉出許多箴言。傳道者專心尋求可喜悅的言語，是憑正直寫的誠實話。

大的小的都在那裏，奴僕脫離主人得自由。

那時，所羅門說：「耶和華曾說要住在幽暗之處。我為你建了一座雄偉的殿宇，作為你永遠居住的地方。」王轉過臉來為以色列全會眾祝福，以色列全會眾都站立。所羅門說：「耶和華－以色列的神是應當稱頌的！因他親口向我父大衛應許的，也親手成就了；他曾說：『自從那日我領我百姓出埃及地以來，我未曾在以色列各支派中選擇一城，在那裏為我的名建造殿宇，也未曾揀選一人作我百姓以色列的君王。但我選擇耶路撒冷，使我的名留在那裏，又揀選大衛治理我的百姓以色列。』我父大衛的心意是要為耶和華－以色列神的名建殿。耶和華卻對我父大衛說：『你有心為我的名建殿，這心意是好的；但你不可建殿，惟有你親生的兒子才可為我的名建殿。』現在耶和華實現了他所應許的話，使我接續我父大衛坐以色列的王位，正如耶和華所說的，我也為耶和華－以色列神的名建造了這殿。我將約櫃安置在那裏，櫃內有耶和華的約，就是他與以色列人所立的約。」

沙番書記又向王報告說：「希勒家祭司遞給我一卷書。」沙番就在王面前朗讀那書。王聽見律法的話，就撕裂衣服。

審判的時候不可看人的情面；無論大小，你們都要聽訟。不可因人而懼怕，因為審判是神的事。你們當中若有難斷的案件，可以呈到我這裏，讓我來聽訟。』

王吩咐眾百姓說：「你們當照這約書上所寫的，向耶和華－你們的神守逾越節。」

亞蘭王吩咐他的戰車長說：「你們不要與他們的大將或小兵交戰，只要單單攻擊以色列王。」

耶和華如此說：看哪，我必照着在猶大王面前所讀那書上記載的一切詛咒，降禍於這地方和其上的居民。
