希勒家對書記沙番說：「我在耶和華殿裏得了律法書。」遂將書遞給沙番。

到了七月，以色列人住在自己的城裏。那時，他們如同一人聚集在水門前的寬闊處，請文士以斯拉將耶和華藉摩西傳給以色列人的律法書帶來。七月初一日，祭司以斯拉將律法書帶到聽了能明白的男女會眾面前。在水門前的寬闊處，從清早到晌午，在眾男女、一切聽了能明白的人面前讀這律法書。眾民側耳而聽。文士以斯拉站在為這事特備的木臺上。瑪他提雅、示瑪、亞奈雅、烏利亞、希勒家，和瑪西雅站在他的右邊；毗大雅、米沙利、瑪基雅、哈順、哈拔大拿、撒迦利亞，和米書蘭站在他的左邊。以斯拉站在眾民以上，在眾民眼前展開這書。他一展開，眾民就都站起來。

他作王第三年，就差遣臣子便‧亥伊勒、俄巴底、撒迦利雅、拿坦業、米該亞往猶大各城去教訓百姓。同着他們有利未人示瑪雅、尼探雅、西巴第雅、亞撒黑、示米拉末、約拿單、亞多尼雅、多比雅、駝‧巴多尼雅，又有祭司以利沙瑪、約蘭同着他們。他們帶着耶和華的律法書，走遍猶大各城教訓百姓。

再者，傳道者因有智慧，仍將知識教訓眾人；又默想，又考查，又陳說許多箴言。傳道者專心尋求可喜悅的言語，是憑正直寫的誠實話。

大小都在那裏；奴僕脫離主人的轄制。

那時，所羅門說：耶和華曾說他必住在幽暗之處。但我已經建造殿宇作你的居所，為你永遠的住處。王轉臉為以色列會眾祝福，以色列會眾就都站立。所羅門說：「耶和華－以色列的神是應當稱頌的！因他親口向我父大衛所應許的，也親手成就了。他說：『自從我領我民出埃及地以來，我未曾在以色列眾支派中選擇一城建造殿宇為我名的居所，也未曾揀選一人作我民以色列的君；但選擇耶路撒冷為我名的居所，又揀選大衛治理我民以色列。』」所羅門說：「我父大衛曾立意要為耶和華－以色列神的名建殿，耶和華卻對我父大衛說：『你立意要為我的名建殿，這意思甚好；只是你不可建殿，惟你所生的兒子必為我名建殿。』「現在耶和華成就了他所應許的話，使我接續我父大衛坐以色列的國位，是照耶和華所說的，又為耶和華－以色列神的名建造了殿。我將約櫃安置在其中，櫃內有耶和華的約，就是他與以色列人所立的約。」

書記沙番又對王說：「祭司希勒家遞給我一卷書。」沙番就在王面前讀那書。王聽見律法上的話，就撕裂衣服，

審判的時候，不可看人的外貌；聽訟不可分貴賤，不可懼怕人，因為審判是屬乎神的。若有難斷的案件，可以呈到我這裏，我就判斷。』

王吩咐眾民說：「你們當照這約書上所寫的，向耶和華－你們的神守逾越節。」

先是亞蘭王吩咐車兵長說：「他們的兵將，無論大小，你們都不可與他們爭戰，只要與以色列王爭戰。」

耶和華如此說：我必照着在猶大王面前所讀那書上的一切咒詛，降禍與這地和其上的居民；
