“他登上了国位的时候，就要把利未支派的祭司面前的律法书，为自己抄录一份副本。那份副本要常在他身边，他一生的年日都要诵读，好学习敬畏耶和华他的神，谨守遵行这律法书上的一切话和这些律例。这样，他的心就不会高傲，轻看自己的兄弟，也不会偏左偏右，离了这诫命；好使他和他的子孙在以色列中，在他的国位上，可以日子长久。”

“看哪！日子快到（这是耶和华的宣告），我要与以色列家和犹大家订立新的约。这新约不像从前我拉他们祖先的手，领他们出埃及地的日子，与他们所立的约；我虽然是他们的丈夫，他们却违背了我的约。”这是耶和华的宣告。

他们也立约，要一心一意寻求耶和华他们列祖的神。不寻求耶和华以色列的神的，无论男女老幼，都必处死。

他又把约书拿过来，念给人民听；他们说：“耶和华吩咐的一切话，我们都必遵行和听从。”

希勒家对书记沙番说：“我在耶和华的殿里发现了律法书。”希勒家就把书交给沙番。

到了七月，以色列人都住在自己的城里。（《马索拉文本》以本句为7:73下半节）那时众民如同一人，在水门前的广场聚集，请经学家以斯拉把耶和华藉摩西命令以色列人遵守的律法书带来。七月初一日，以斯拉祭司把律法书带到所有听了能明白的男女会众面前。在水门前面的广场，从清早到中午，向众男女和听了能明白的人宣读出来。众民都侧耳倾听这律法书的话。经学家以斯拉站在为这事特制的木台上；站在他右边的，有玛他提雅、示玛、亚奈雅、乌利亚、希勒家和玛西雅；站在他左边的，有毗大雅、米沙利、玛基雅、哈顺、哈拔大拿、撒迦利亚和米书兰。以斯拉在众人眼前展开那书卷；他高高地站在众民以上，他把书卷展开，众民就站起来。

他作王第三年，就差派他的大臣便．亥伊勒、俄巴底、撒迦利雅、拿坦业、米该亚，到犹大各城去教训人。和他们同去的，还有示玛雅、尼探雅、西巴第雅、亚撒黑、示米拉末、约拿单、亚多尼雅、多比雅和驼．巴多尼雅等几位利未人；又有以利沙玛和约兰两位祭司和他们同去。他们带着耶和华的律法书，在犹大教训人；他们走遍犹大各城，在民间教训人。

传道者不但有智慧，还将知识教训众人；他既揣摩，又查考，也编撰了许多箴言。传道者搜寻可喜悦的话，正确地写下真理。

老少尊卑都在那里，奴仆脱离主人的辖制。

那时所罗门说：“耶和华曾说他要住在幽暗之中。我已经为你建造了巍峨的殿宇，作你永远居住的地方。”然后王转过来，给以色列全体会众祝福，以色列全体会众都站着。所罗门说：“耶和华以色列的神是应当称颂的！他亲口对我的父亲大卫应许的，已亲手作成了，他说：‘自从我领我的子民从埃及地出来的那天，我没有在以色列众支派中，拣选一座城建造殿宇，使我的名留在那里；我也没有拣选一个人作领袖，统治我的子民以色列。我却拣选了耶路撒冷，使我的名留在那里；也拣选了大卫，统治我的子民以色列。’我的父亲大卫有心要为耶和华以色列的神的名建造殿宇。耶和华却对我的父亲大卫说：‘你心想要为我的名建造殿宇，你心意很好；不过不是由你建造殿宇，而是你的儿子，你亲生的儿子，他必为我的名建殿。’现在耶和华实现了他所说过的话，我已经起来接续我的父亲大卫，坐上了以色列的王位，就像耶和华所说的；我为耶和华以色列的神的名建造了这殿。我也把约柜安放在殿里，约柜中有耶和华和以色列人所立的约。”

书记沙番又告诉王，说：“希勒家祭司还交给我一卷书卷。”于是沙番在王面前诵读那书。王一听见律法书上的话，就撕裂自己的衣服，

审判的时候，不可偏袒人；无论贵贱尊卑，都要一样地听讼；不可怕人的情面，因为审判是属于神的；如果你们遇见难断的案件，可以呈到我这里来，让我审断。’

王又命令众民说：“照着这约书上所写的，守逾越节，记念耶和华你们的神。”

原来亚兰王曾经吩咐他的战车队长说：“无论是大小的将兵，你们都不要和他们交战，只管攻击以色列王。”

耶和华这样说：我要按着在犹大王面前诵读的那卷书上所写的一切咒诅，降灾在这地和这地的居民身上。
