“ Go, seek an oracle from the LORD for me and those who remain in Israel and Judah. Find out about the words of this scroll that has been discovered. For the LORD’s fury has been ignited against us, because our ancestors have not obeyed the word of the LORD by doing all that this scroll instructs!”

汝其往哉、為我與以色列及猶大之遺民、以此書之言、詢於耶和華、因我列祖不守耶和華之言、不遵此書所載而行、故耶和華向我、洩忿甚烈、

爾往為我、為以色列及猶大之餘民、因此書之言、問於主、我列祖不守主之言、不遵此書所載而行、主必向我大震烈怒、

“ Go and inquire of the Lord for me and for the remnant in Israel and Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the Lord’s anger that is poured out on us because those who have gone before us have not kept the word of the Lord; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written in this book.”

“ Go. Ask the Lord for advice. Ask him about what is written in this book that has been found. Do it for me. Also do it for the people who remain in Israel and Judah. The Lord has been very angry with us. That’s because our people before us didn’t obey what the Lord had said. They didn’t do everything written in this book.”

“ Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.”

“ Go to the Temple and speak to the Lord for me and for all the remnant of Israel and Judah. Inquire about the words written in the scroll that has been found. For the Lord’s great anger has been poured out on us because our ancestors have not obeyed the word of the Lord. We have not been doing everything this scroll says we must do.”

“ Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that was found. For great is the LORD’s wrath that is poured out on us because our ancestors have not kept the word of the LORD in order to do everything written in this book.”

“ Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book which has been found; for the wrath of the Lord which has poured out on us is great, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to act in accordance with everything that is written in this book.”

“ Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for those who are left in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.”

Go ye, inquire of Jehovah for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of Jehovah, to do according unto all that is written in this book.

“ Go. Ask Yahweh for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that was found. For great is the Lord’s wrath that is poured out on us because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord in order to do everything written in this book.”

Go, enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great[ is] the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.

“ Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is Yahweh’s wrath that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept Yahweh’s word, to do according to all that is written in this book.”

Then some men from Israel’s elders came to me and sat down in front of me.The word of the LORD came to me:“ Son of man, these men have erected their idols in their hearts and placed the obstacle leading to their iniquity right before their faces. Should I really allow them to seek me?Therefore speak to them and say to them,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: When any one from the house of Israel erects his idols in his heart and sets the obstacle leading to his iniquity before his face, and then consults a prophet, I the LORD am determined to answer him personally according to the enormity of his idolatry.I will do this in order to capture the hearts of the house of Israel, who have alienated themselves from me on account of all their idols.’“ Therefore say to the house of Israel,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: Return! Turn from your idols, and turn your faces away from your abominations.For when anyone from the house of Israel, or the foreigner who lives in Israel, separates himself from me and erects his idols in his heart and sets the obstacle leading to his iniquity before his face, and then consults a prophet to seek something from me, I the LORD am determined to answer him personally.I will set my face against that person and will make him an object lesson and a byword and will cut him off from among my people. Then you will know that I am the LORD.“‘ As for the prophet, if he is made a fool by being deceived into speaking a prophetic word– I, the LORD, have made a fool of that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and destroy him from among my people Israel.They will bear their punishment; the punishment of the one who sought an oracle will be the same as the punishment of the prophet who gave itso that the house of Israel will no longer go astray from me, nor continue to defile themselves by all their sins. They will be my people and I will be their God, declares the sovereign LORD.’”

In one day King Pekah son of Remaliah of Israel killed 120,000 warriors in Judah, because they had abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors.

“ Please ask the LORD to come and help us, because King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is attacking us. Maybe the LORD will perform one of his miracles as in times past and make him stop attacking us and leave.”

So the LORD brought against them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria. They seized Manasseh, put hooks in his nose, bound him with bronze chains, and carried him away to Babylon.

Eliakim the palace supervisor, Shebna the scribe, and the leading priests, clothed in sackcloth, sent this message to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz:“ This is what Hezekiah says:‘ This is a day of distress, insults, and humiliation, as when a baby is ready to leave the birth canal, but the mother lacks the strength to push it through.Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all these things the chief adviser has spoken on behalf of his master, the king of Assyria, who sent him to taunt the living God. When the LORD your God hears, perhaps he will punish him for the things he has said. So pray for this remnant that remains.’”

In the ninth year of Hoshea’s reign, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the people of Israel to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, along the Habor( the river of Gozan), and in the cities of the Medes.This happened because the Israelites sinned against the LORD their God, who brought them up from the land of Egypt and freed them from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshiped other gods;

but wrath and anger to those who live in selfish ambition and do not obey the truth but follow unrighteousness.There will be affliction and distress on everyone who does evil, on the Jew first and also the Greek,but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, for the Jew first and also the Greek.For there is no partiality with God.For all who have sinned apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.

“‘ If, however, you do not obey me and keep all these commandments–if you reject my statutes and abhor my regulations so that you do not keep all my commandments and you break my covenant–I for my part will do this to you: I will inflict horror on you, consumption and fever, which diminish eyesight and drain away the vitality of life. You will sow your seed in vain because your enemies will eat it.I will set my face against you. You will be struck down before your enemies, those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when there is no one pursuing you.“‘ If, in spite of all these things, you do not obey me, I will discipline you seven times more on account of your sins.I will break your strong pride and make your sky like iron and your land like bronze.Your strength will be used up in vain, your land will not give its yield, and the trees of the land will not produce their fruit.“‘ If you walk in hostility against me and are not willing to obey me, I will increase your affliction seven times according to your sins.I will send the wild animals against you and they will bereave you of your children, annihilate your cattle, and diminish your population so that your roads will become deserted.“‘ If in spite of these things you do not allow yourselves to be disciplined and you walk in hostility against me,I myself will also walk in hostility against you and strike you seven times on account of your sins.I will bring on you an avenging sword, a covenant vengeance. Although you will gather together into your cities, I will send pestilence among you and you will be given into enemy hands.When I break off your supply of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven; they will ration your bread by weight, and you will eat and not be satisfied.“‘ If in spite of this you do not obey me but walk in hostility against me,I will walk in hostile rage against you and I myself will also discipline you seven times on account of your sins.You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters.I will destroy your high places and cut down your incense altars, and I will stack your dead bodies on top of the lifeless bodies of your idols. I will abhor you.I will lay your cities waste and make your sanctuaries desolate, and I will refuse to smell your soothing aromas.I myself will make the land desolate and your enemies who live in it will be appalled.I will scatter you among the nations and unsheathe the sword after you, so your land will become desolate and your cities will become a waste.“‘ Then the land will make up for its Sabbaths all the days it lies desolate while you are in the land of your enemies; then the land will rest and make up its Sabbaths.All the days of the desolation it will have the rest it did not have on your Sabbaths when you lived on it.“‘ As for the ones who remain among you, I will bring despair into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The sound of a blowing leaf will pursue them, and they will flee as one who flees the sword and fall down even though there is no pursuer.They will stumble over each other as those who flee before a sword, though there is no pursuer, and there will be no one to take a stand for you before your enemies.You will perish among the nations; the land of your enemies will consume you.“‘ As for the ones who remain among you, they will rot away because of their iniquity in the lands of your enemies, and they will also rot away because of their ancestors’ iniquities which are with them.However, when they confess their iniquity and their ancestors’ iniquity which they committed by trespassing against me, by which they also walked in hostility against me( and I myself will walk in hostility against them and bring them into the land of their enemies), and then their uncircumcised hearts become humbled and they make up for their iniquity,I will remember my covenant with Jacob and also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.The land will be abandoned by them in order that it may make up for its Sabbaths while it is made desolate without them, and they will make up for their iniquity because they have rejected my regulations and have abhorred my statutes.In spite of this, however, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them and abhor them to make a complete end of them, to break my covenant with them, for I am the LORD their God.I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out from the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the LORD.’”These are the statutes, regulations, and instructions which the LORD established between himself and the Israelites at Mount Sinai through Moses.

Then Jehoshaphat added,“ First seek an oracle from the LORD.”So the king of Israel assembled about four hundred prophets and asked them,“ Should I attack Ramoth Gilead or not?” They said,“ Attack! The sovereign one will hand it over to the king.”But Jehoshaphat asked,“ Is there not a prophet of the LORD still here, that we may ask him?”

Beware that the heart of no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you turns away from the LORD our God today to pursue and serve the gods of those nations; beware that there is among you no root producing poisonous and bitter fruit.When such a person hears the words of this oath he secretly blesses himself and says,“ I will have peace though I continue to walk with a stubborn spirit.” This will destroy the watered ground with the parched.The LORD will be unwilling to forgive him, and his intense anger will rage against that man; all the curses written in this scroll will fall upon him and the LORD will obliterate his name from memory.The LORD will single him out for judgment from all the tribes of Israel according to all the curses of the covenant written in this scroll of the law.The generation to come– your descendants who will rise up after you, as well as the foreigner who will come from distant places– will see the afflictions of that land and the illnesses that the LORD has brought on it.The whole land will be covered with brimstone, salt, and burning debris; it will not be planted nor will it sprout or produce grass. It will resemble the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD destroyed in his intense anger.Then all the nations will ask,“ Why has the LORD done all this to this land? What is this fierce, heated display of anger all about?”Then people will say,“ Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods they did not know and that he did not permit them to worship.That is why the LORD’s anger erupted against this land, bringing on it all the curses written in this scroll.So the LORD has uprooted them from their land in anger, wrath, and great rage and has deported them to another land, as is clear today.”

The LORD was angry at Judah and Jerusalem and made them an appalling object of horror at which people hiss out their scorn, as you can see with your own eyes.

Moses said to his father-in-law,“ Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

Then the LORD said to Moses,“ You are about to die, and then these people will begin to prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land into which they are going. They will reject me and break my covenant that I have made with them.At that time my anger will erupt against them and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome them so that they will say at that time,‘ Have not these disasters overcome us because our God is not among us?’But I will certainly hide myself at that time because of all the wickedness they will have done by turning to other gods.Now write down for yourselves the following song and teach it to the Israelites. Put it into their very mouths so that this song may serve as my witness against the Israelites!For after I have brought them to the land I promised to their ancestors– one flowing with milk and honey– and they eat their fill and become fat, then they will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant.Then when many disasters and distresses overcome them this song will testify against them, for their descendants will not forget it. I know the intentions they have in mind today, even before I bring them to the land I have promised.”So on that day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites,

For the law brings wrath, because where there is no law there is no transgression either.

But Jeshurun became fat and kicked, you got fat, thick, and stuffed! Then he deserted the God who made him, and treated the Rock who saved him with contempt.They made him jealous with other gods, they enraged him with abhorrent idols.They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods they had not known; to new gods who had recently come along, gods your ancestors had not known about.You have forgotten the Rock who fathered you, and put out of mind the God who gave you birth.But the LORD took note and despised them because his sons and daughters enraged him.He said,“ I will reject them, I will see what will happen to them; for they are a perverse generation, children who show no loyalty.They have made me jealous with false gods, enraging me with their worthless gods; so I will make them jealous with a people they do not recognize, with a nation slow to learn I will enrage them.For a fire has been kindled by my anger, and it burns to lowest Sheol; it consumes the earth and its produce, and ignites the foundations of the mountains.I will increase their disasters, I will use up my arrows on them.They will be starved by famine, eaten by plague, and bitterly stung; I will send the teeth of wild animals against them, along with the poison of creatures that crawl in the dust.The sword will make people childless outside, and terror will do so inside; they will destroy both the young man and the virgin, the infant and the gray-haired man.

In the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, some of the elders of Israel came to seek the LORD, and they sat down in front of me.The word of the LORD came to me:“ Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and tell them:‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: Are you coming to seek me? As surely as I live, I will not allow you to seek me, declares the sovereign LORD.’“ Are you willing to pronounce judgment? Are you willing to pronounce judgment, son of man? Then confront them with the abominable practices of their fathers,and say to them:“‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: On the day I chose Israel I swore to the descendants of the house of Jacob and made myself known to them in the land of Egypt. I swore to them,“ I am the LORD your God.”On that day I swore to bring them out of the land of Egypt to a land which I had picked out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands.I said to them,“ Each of you must get rid of the detestable idols you keep before you, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the LORD your God.”

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness,

“ But if you ignore the LORD your God and are not careful to keep all his commandments and statutes I am giving you today, then all these curses will come upon you in full force:

They said to him,“ Please grant our request and pray to the LORD your God for all those of us who are still left alive here. For, as you yourself can see, there are only a few of us left out of the many there were before.

However, if you turn aside and do not obey, but are lured away to worship and serve other gods,I declare to you this very day that you will certainly perish! You will not extend your time in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.Today I invoke heaven and earth as a witness against you that I have set life and death, blessing and curse, before you. Therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live!

( Now it used to be in Israel that whenever someone went to inquire of God he would say,“ Come on, let’s go to the seer.” For today’s prophet used to be called a seer.)
