有一天，比錄人臨門的兒子利甲和巴納前去，在白天最熱的時候來到伊施波設的家，他正在睡午覺。他們裝作要取麥子而進到內屋，刺透伊施波設的腹部。隨後利甲和他兄弟巴納逃離了。他們進屋時，伊施波設正躺在臥室的床上。他們刺死他，砍下他的頭，然後拿著頭顱，沿著亞拉巴的路走了一整夜。他們把伊施波設的頭帶到希伯崙大衛那裡，對王說：「你的仇敵掃羅曾經尋索你的性命，看哪，這是他兒子伊施波設的頭。今天耶和華為我主我王向掃羅和他的後裔報仇了。」大衛回應比錄人臨門的兒子利甲和他兄弟巴納，說：「我指著救贖我性命脫離一切患難的耶和華的永生起誓：曾經有人向我報信說『看哪，掃羅死了』，自以為是報好消息的，我尚且抓住他，在洗革拉把他殺了，作為對他報『好消息』的回報，更何況惡人把義人殺死在義人的家裡、在他自己的床上，我難道不會從你們手中追討殺他流血的罪，把你們從地上除滅嗎？」於是大衛吩咐僕人把他們殺了，砍斷他們的手腳，掛在希伯崙的水池旁邊，然後把伊施波設的頭拿去，葬在希伯崙押尼珥的墳墓裡。
