木匠拉準繩，用筆畫出偶像的樣子，用鉋子鉋成形狀，用圓規畫出輪廓，把偶像做成人的樣式，像人那樣的美麗，好住在廟裡。他為自己砍伐香柏樹；他選取柏樹或橡樹，讓它在樹林中茁壯成長；他又栽種松樹，讓它靠雨水長大；這些樹可以給人作燃料。他拿一些來生火取暖，還用來燒火烤餅；他也用這些樹製作神像來下拜，製造雕像來膜拜。他用一半的木頭燒火，在其上做肉吃；他烤肉、吃飽，又自己取暖，說：「啊哈，我暖和了！我感到火熱了。」他用剩下的一半做了一個神像，就是他雕刻的偶像，然後向它俯伏下拜，又向它禱告，說：「求你救我，因為你是我的神。」這樣的人不明白，也不領悟，因為耶和華蒙蔽他們的眼使他們不能看見，蒙蔽他們的心使他們不能明悟。他們不反思，也沒有知識和聰慧來說：「我用一半的木頭燒火，又在火炭上烘餅，烤肉吃。我怎麼能用剩下的木頭製造可憎之物呢？我怎麼能向一塊木頭膜拜呢？」他們追求的只是灰燼；他們的心受了迷惑，使他們偏離正道；他們不能救自己，也不會說：「我右手中的，難道不是虛謊之物嗎？」
