木匠拉准绳，用笔画出偶像的样子，用刨子刨成形状，用圆规画出轮廓，把偶像做成人的样式，像人那样的美丽，好住在庙里。他为自己砍伐香柏树；他选取柏树或橡树，让它在树林中茁壮成长；他又栽种松树，让它靠雨水长大；这些树可以给人作燃料。他拿一些来生火取暖，还用来烧火烤饼；他也用这些树制作神像来下拜，制造雕像来膜拜。他用一半的木头烧火，在其上做肉吃；他烤肉、吃饱，又自己取暖，说：“啊哈，我暖和了！我感到火热了。”他用剩下的一半做了一个神像，就是他雕刻的偶像，然后向它俯伏下拜，又向它祷告，说：“求你救我，因为你是我的神。”这样的人不明白，也不领悟，因为耶和华蒙蔽他们的眼使他们不能看见，蒙蔽他们的心使他们不能明悟。他们不反思，也没有知识和聪慧来说：“我用一半的木头烧火，又在火炭上烘饼，烤肉吃。我怎么能用剩下的木头制造可憎之物呢？我怎么能向一块木头膜拜呢？”他们追求的只是灰烬；他们的心受了迷惑，使他们偏离正道；他们不能救自己，也不会说：“我右手中的，难道不是虚谎之物吗？”
