But Hezekiah’s heart was proud and he did not respond to the kindness shown him; therefore the Lord’s wrath was on him and on Judah and Jerusalem.

But Hezekiah’s heart was proud. He didn’t give thanks for the many kind things the Lord had done for him. So the Lord became angry with him. He also became angry with Judah and Jerusalem.

But Hezekiah did not respond appropriately to the kindness shown him, and he became proud. So the Lord’s anger came against him and against Judah and Jerusalem.

But when he was strong, he grew proud, to his destruction. For he was unfaithful to the Lord his God and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.

And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to test him and to know all that was in his heart.

You have indeed struck down Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Be content with your glory, and stay at home, for why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?”

Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel.

Beware lest you say in your heart,‘ My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’

Then Jesus answered,“ Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”

but you have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven. And the vessels of his house have been brought in before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know, but the God in whose hand is your breath, and whose are all your ways, you have not honored.

And Hezekiah welcomed them, and he showed them all his treasure house, the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious oil, his armory, all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his house or in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them.

either three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes while the sword of your enemies overtakes you, or else three days of the sword of the Lord, pestilence on the land, with the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me.”Then David said to Gad,“ I am in great distress. Let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is very great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel, and 70,000 men of Israel fell.And God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, the Lord saw, and he relented from the calamity. And he said to the angel who was working destruction,“ It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.And David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, and in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.And David said to God,“ Was it not I who gave command to number the people? It is I who have sinned and done great evil. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Lord my God, be against me and against my father’s house. But do not let the plague be on your people.”

Take with you words and return to the Lord; say to him,“ Take away all iniquity; accept what is good, and we will pay with bulls the vows of our lips.

“ Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.

Do you thus repay the Lord, you foolish and senseless people? Is not he your father, who created you, who made you and established you?

Again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying,“ Go, number Israel and Judah.”

You say,‘ See, I have struck down Edom,’ and your heart has lifted you up in boastfulness. But now stay at home. Why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?”

But David’s heart struck him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the Lord,“ I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O Lord, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”And when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,“ Go and say to David,‘ Thus says the Lord, Three things I offer you. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.’”So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him,“ Shall three years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now consider, and decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me.”Then David said to Gad,“ I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.”So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning until the appointed time. And there died of the people from Dan to Beersheba 70,000 men.And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people,“ It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.Then David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel who was striking the people, and said,“ Behold, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me and against my father’s house.”

He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for“ God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them,and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied,then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.

“ Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:“ Because your heart is proud, and you have said,‘ I am a god, I sit in the seat of the gods, in the heart of the seas,’ yet you are but a man, and no god, though you make your heart like the heart of a god—

Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you.

But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was brought down from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him.

But Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to King Jehoshaphat,“ Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord? Because of this, wrath has gone out against you from the Lord.

by your great wisdom in your trade you have increased your wealth, and your heart has become proud in your wealth—

What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me?I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord,
