But Hezekiah’s heart was proud and he did not respond to the kindness shown him; therefore the Lord’s wrath was on him and on Judah and Jerusalem.

But Hezekiah’s heart was proud. He didn’t give thanks for the many kind things the Lord had done for him. So the Lord became angry with him. He also became angry with Judah and Jerusalem.

and they abandoned the temple of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, and served the Asherah poles and the idols. So there was wrath against Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs.

But when he became strong, he grew arrogant, and it led to his own destruction. He acted unfaithfully against the LORD his God by going into the LORD’s sanctuary to burn incense on the incense altar.

When the ambassadors of Babylon’s rulers were sent to him to inquire about the miraculous sign that happened in the land, God left him to test him and discover what was in his heart.

You have indeed defeated Edom, and you have become overconfident. Enjoy your glory and stay at home. Why should you stir up such trouble that you fall— you and Judah with you?”

Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to count the people of Israel.

You may say to yourself,‘ My power and my own ability have gained this wealth for me,’

Then Jesus said,“ Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?Didn’t any return to give glory to God except this foreigner?”

Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of the heavens. The vessels from his house were brought to you, and as you and your nobles, wives, and concubines drank wine from them, you praised the gods made of silver and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or understand. But you have not glorified the God who holds your life-breath in his hand and who controls the whole course of your life.

Hezekiah listened to the letters and showed the envoys his whole treasure house— the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil— and his armory, and everything that was found in his treasuries. There was nothing in his palace and in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them.

three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes with the sword of your enemy overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the LORD— a plague on the land, the angel of the LORD bringing destruction to the whole territory of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.”David answered Gad,“ I’m in anguish. I am the one who has sinned and acted very wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? LORD my God, please let your hand be against me and against my father’s family, but don’t let the plague be against your people.”

Take words of repentance with you and return to the LORD. Say to him,“ Forgive all our iniquity and accept what is good, so that we may repay you with praise from our lips.

Look, his ego is inflated; he is without integrity. But the righteous one will live by his faith.

Is this how you repay the LORD, you foolish and senseless people? Isn’t he your Father and Creator? Didn’t he make you and sustain you?

The LORD’s anger burned against Israel again, and he stirred up David against them to say,“ Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.”

You have said,‘ Look, I have defeated Edom,’ and you have become overconfident that you will get glory. Now stay at home. Why stir up such trouble so that you fall and Judah with you?”

David’s conscience troubled him after he had taken a census of the troops. He said to the LORD,“ I have sinned greatly in what I’ve done. Now, LORD, because I’ve been very foolish, please take away your servant’s guilt.”When David got up in the morning, the word of the LORD had come to the prophet Gad, David’s seer:“ Go and say to David,‘ This is what the LORD says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them, and I will do it to you.’”So Gad went to David, told him the choices, and asked him,“ Do you want three years of famine to come on your land, to flee from your foes three months while they pursue you, or to have a plague in your land three days? Now, consider carefully what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.”David answered Gad,“ I have great anxiety. Please, let us fall into the LORD’s hands because his mercies are great, but don’t let me fall into human hands.”So the LORD sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the appointed time, and from Dan to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men died.Then the angel extended his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, but the LORD relented concerning the destruction and said to the angel who was destroying the people,“ Enough, withdraw your hand now!” The angel of the LORD was then at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.When David saw the angel striking the people, he said to the LORD,“ Look, I am the one who has sinned; I am the one who has done wrong. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let your hand be against me and my father’s family.”

He must not be a new convert, or he might become conceited and incur the same condemnation as the devil.

In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time,

When you eat and are full, and build beautiful houses to live in,and your herds and flocks grow large, and your silver and gold multiply, and everything else you have increases,be careful that your heart doesn’t become proud and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.

Your heart became proud because of your beauty; For the sake of your splendor you corrupted your wisdom. So I threw you down to the ground; I made you a spectacle before kings.

By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, but your heart has become proud because of your wealth.

How can I repay the LORD for all the good he has done for me?I will take the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.
