When all this had ended, the Israelites who were there went out to the towns of Judah, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. They destroyed the high places and the altars throughout Judah and Benjamin and in Ephraim and Manasseh. After they had destroyed all of them, the Israelites returned to their own towns and to their own property.

The Passover Feast came to an end. The people of Israel who were in Jerusalem went out to the towns of Judah. They smashed the sacred stones. They cut down the poles used to worship the female god named Asherah. They destroyed the high places and the altars. They did those things all through Judah and Benjamin. They also did them in Ephraim and Manasseh. They destroyed all the objects used to worship other gods. Then the Israelites returned to their own towns and property.

Now when all this was finished, all Israel who were present went out to the cities of Judah and broke in pieces the pillars and cut down the Asherim and broke down the high places and the altars throughout all Judah and Benjamin, and in Ephraim and Manasseh, until they had destroyed them all. Then all the people of Israel returned to their cities, every man to his possession.

When the festival ended, the Israelites who attended went to all the towns of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh, and they smashed all the sacred pillars, cut down the Asherah poles, and removed the pagan shrines and altars. After this, the Israelites returned to their own towns and homes.

When all this was completed, all Israel who had attended went out to the cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars, chopped down the Asherah poles, and tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and Manasseh, to the last one. Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his own possession.

王登上耶和华的殿，犹大众人、耶路撒冷所有的居民，还有祭司、先知和众民，不论大小，都一同前往。王就把在耶和华殿发现的约书所记的一切话都念给他们听。王站在柱旁，在耶和华面前立约，要一心一意跟从耶和华，谨守他的诫命、典章和律例，实行这书上所写有关这约的话。众民都一同立约。王吩咐希勒家大祭司、副祭司和守殿门的，把所有为巴力、亚舍拉和天上的万象所制造的器皿，从耶和华殿里搬出去，在耶路撒冷城外汲沦谷的田野，把它们烧了。然后把它们的灰烬带到伯特利去。他废除了从前犹大列王所立、在犹大各城的邱坛，和耶路撒冷的周围焚香拜偶像的祭司。又废除向巴力、日、月、星辰和天上万象焚香的人。他把亚舍拉像从耶和华殿里搬走，拿到耶路撒冷外的汲沦溪去，在汲沦溪把它烧毁，磨碎成灰，把灰撒在平民的坟墓上。他拆毁在耶和华殿内男性庙妓的房屋，就是妇女为亚舍拉编织袍子的地方。他又从犹大各城把祭司们召来，污秽祭司们焚香的邱坛，从迦巴直到别是巴。他又拆毁设在城门的邱坛，就是在市长约书亚门的出入处，在城门的左边。但是邱坛的祭司不会登上在耶路撒冷耶和华的祭坛，他们只是在他们的兄弟中间吃无酵饼。他又污秽在欣嫩子谷的陀斐特，不许人在那里将儿女焚烧献给摩洛（“将儿女焚烧献给摩洛”直译是“使儿女经过进入火中给摩洛”）。他又除去犹大列王献给日头的马匹；这些马匹是在耶和华殿的入口处，靠近太监拿单．米勒在院子里的住宅。他又把献给日头的战车用火烧掉。他又把亚哈斯的楼房顶上，犹大列王所做的祭坛，和玛拿西在耶和华殿的两院中所做的祭坛拆毁，就地打碎，把它们的灰尘倒进汲沦溪去。在耶路撒冷东面、橄榄山南面的邱坛，就是以色列王所罗门为西顿人可憎的神亚斯他录、摩押人可憎的神基抹，和亚扪人可憎的神米勒公所筑的邱坛，王都污秽了。他又打碎神柱，砍下亚舍拉，把死人的骨头布满那个地方。此外，甚至在伯特利的祭坛和那使以色列人陷于罪中的尼八的儿子耶罗波安所做的邱坛，他都拆毁焚烧，压碎成灰，又把亚舍拉烧了。约西亚转过身来，看见在山上的坟墓，于是派人把骨头从坟墓中取出来，烧在祭坛上，污秽它，就像神人从前所宣告的耶和华的话。约西亚说：“我看见的这墓碑是谁的呢？”那城的人对他说：“这是以前从犹大来预告你在伯特利祭坛上所作的事的神人的坟墓。”所以王说：“由他吧！不要让人动他的骨头。”于是他们没有碰他的骨头和那从撒玛利亚来的先知的骨头。以色列诸王在撒玛利亚各城市建造，以致激怒耶和华的一切邱坛上的庙堂，约西亚都除去；他照着在伯特利所行的一切对付它们。他又把所有邱坛的祭司都在祭坛上宰了。他把人的骨头烧在它们上面，然后回到耶路撒冷去了。

你不可跪拜他们的神像，也不可事奉它们，不可作他们所作的，不可模仿他们的行为，却要把神像完全拆毁，打碎他们的柱像。

希西家派人走遍以色列和犹大，又写信给以法莲人和玛拿西人，叫他们到耶路撒冷耶和华的殿来，守逾越节记念耶和华以色列的神。因为王和众领袖，以及耶路撒冷的全体会众曾经商议，要在二月守逾越节。（但他们不能如期守逾越节，因为自洁的祭司不够，人民也没有齐集在耶路撒冷。）王和全体会众都认为这计划很好，于是下了命令，通告全以色列，从别是巴直到但，叫人民来耶路撒冷守逾越节记念耶和华以色列的神，因为照着所记的定例举行这节的人不多。信差就带着王和众领袖发出的书信，走遍全以色列和犹大，照着王的吩咐，宣告说：“以色列人哪，你们应当转向耶和华，亚伯拉罕、以撒和以色列的神，使他也转向你们这些在亚述王手中逃脱的余民。你们不要像你们的列祖和你们的亲族，他们得罪了耶和华他们列祖的神，以致耶和华使他们成为令人惊骇的对象，就像你们自己所见的。现在你们不可顽固，像你们的列祖那样；要顺服耶和华，进入他永远分别为圣的圣所，事奉耶和华你们的神，使他的烈怒转离你们。如果你们是归向耶和华，你们的亲族和儿女就必在俘掳他们的人面前蒙怜悯，可以返回这地；因为耶和华你们的神是有恩惠有怜悯；如果你们归向他，他必不转脸不顾你们。”信差从这城到那城，走遍了以法莲和玛拿西各地，直到西布伦；那里的人却戏弄他们，讥笑他们。可是在亚设、玛拿西和西布伦中，也有人愿意谦卑，来到耶路撒冷。神的能力也帮助犹大人，使他们一心遵行王和众领袖奉耶和华的命令发出的吩咐。二月，有很多人在耶路撒冷聚集，要举行无酵节，集合了一大群会众。他们起来，把耶路撒冷城中的祭坛和一切香坛，尽都除去，抛在汲沦溪中。二月十四日，他们宰了逾越节的羊羔。祭司和利未人都觉得惭愧，就自洁，把燔祭带到耶和华的殿里。他们遵照神人摩西的律法，按着定例，站在自己的岗位上。祭司从利未人手里把血接过来，洒在祭坛上。因为会众中有很多人还没有自洁，所以利未人必须为所有不洁的人宰杀逾越节的羊羔，使他们在耶和华面前成为圣洁。原来有一大群人，很多是从以法莲、玛拿西、以萨迦和西布伦来的，还没有自洁，就吃逾越节的羊羔，不遵照所记的定例；因此，希西家为他们祷告说：“凡是立定心意，专一寻求神耶和华他们列祖的神的，虽然没有照着圣所洁净的礼自洁，愿良善的耶和华也饶恕他们。”

他除掉外族人的祭坛和邱坛，打断神柱，砍下亚舍拉，

于是有耶和华的火降下来，吞灭了燔祭、木柴、石头和尘土，连沟里的水也烧干了。众人看见了，就面伏于地，说：“耶和华是神！耶和华是神！”以利亚对他们说：“捉住巴力的先知，一个也不要让他们逃脱。”于是众人捉住他们。以利亚带他们下到基顺河边，在那里杀了他们。

于是众民都去到巴力庙，把庙拆毁，打碎祭坛和偶像，又在祭坛前杀了巴力的祭司玛坦。

你们却要这样待他们：拆毁他们的祭坛，打碎他们的神柱，砍下他们的亚舍拉，用火焚烧他们的雕像。
