My sons, do not neglect your duties any longer! The Lord has chosen you to stand in his presence, to minister to him, and to lead the people in worship and present offerings to him.”

At that time the Lord singled out the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to stand before the Lord to serve Him and to bless in His name, until this day.

“ Bring the tribe of Levi forward and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.They shall perform the duties for him and for the whole congregation in front of the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.They shall also take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the duties of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.So you shall assign the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are exclusively assigned to him from the sons of Israel.

But also bring your brothers with you, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, so that they may join you and serve you, while you and your sons with you are before the tent of the testimony.And they shall perform duties for you and the duties of the whole tent, but they shall not come near the furnishings of the sanctuary and the altar, or both they and you will die.They shall join you and perform the duties of the tent of meeting, for all the service of the tent; but an unauthorized person shall not come near you.So you shall perform the duties of the sanctuary and the duties of the altar, so that there will no longer be wrath on the sons of Israel.Behold, I Myself have taken your fellow Levites from among the sons of Israel; they are a gift to you, dedicated to the Lord, to perform the service for the tent of meeting.But you and your sons with you shall attend to your priesthood for everything that concerns the altar and inside the veil, and you are to perform service. I am giving you the priesthood as a service that is a gift, and the unauthorized person who comes near shall be put to death.”

Fire also came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Tell Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, that he shall pick up the censers from the midst of the burned area, because they are holy; and you are to scatter the burning coals further away.As for the censers of these men who have sinned at the cost of their own lives, have them made into hammered sheets as plating for the altar, since they did present them before the Lord and they are holy; and they shall serve as a sign to the sons of Israel.”So the priest Eleazar took the bronze censers which the men who were burned had offered, and they hammered them out as plating for the altar,as a reminder to the sons of Israel so that no layman, anyone who was not of the descendants of Aaron, would approach to burn incense before the Lord; then he would not become like Korah and his group— just as the Lord had spoken to him through Moses.

“ Take the Levites from among the sons of Israel and cleanse them.This is what you shall do to them, for their cleansing: sprinkle purifying water on them, and have them use a razor over their whole body, and they shall wash their clothes and cleanse themselves.Then have them take a bull with its grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil; and you shall take a second bull as a sin offering.So you shall present the Levites in front of the tent of meeting. You shall also assemble the whole congregation of the sons of Israel,and present the Levites before the Lord; and the sons of Israel shall lay their hands on the Levites.Aaron then shall present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering from the sons of Israel, so that they may qualify to perform the service of the Lord.Now the Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls; then you are to offer the one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to the Lord, to make atonement for the Levites.And you shall have the Levites stand before Aaron and his sons so as to present them as a wave offering to the Lord.“ So you shall single out the Levites from among the sons of Israel, and the Levites shall be Mine.
