Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I exact my vengeance upon them.’”

“ Because you violently slaughtered your relatives, the people of Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be destroyed forever.You stood aloof while strangers took his army captive, and foreigners advanced to his gates. When they cast lots over Jerusalem, you behaved as though you were in league with them.You should not have gloated when your relatives suffered calamity. You should not have captured their refugees when they suffered adversity.“ For the day of the LORD is approaching for all the nations! Just as you have done, so it will be done to you. You will get exactly what your deeds deserve.For just as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink, and they will gulp down; they will be as though they had never been.

The LORD was furious with Israel and turned them over to King Cushan-Rishathaim of Aram-Naharaim. They were Cushan-Rishathaim’s subjects for eight years.

The prophet then said to him,“ This is what the LORD says,‘ Because you released a man I had determined should die, you will pay with your life and your people will suffer instead of his people.’”

Isaiah the prophet visited King Hezekiah and asked him,“ What did these men say? Where do they come from?” Hezekiah replied,“ They come from the distant land of Babylon.”Isaiah asked,“ What have they seen in your palace?” Hezekiah replied,“ They have seen everything in my palace. I showed them everything in my treasuries.”

Then they said,“ Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves. Otherwise we will be scattered across the face of the entire earth.”

The LORD his God handed him over to the king of Syria. The Syrians defeated him and deported many captives to Damascus. He was also handed over to the king of Israel, who thoroughly defeated him.

The prophet visited the king of Israel and instructed him,“ Go, fortify your defenses. Determine what you must do, for in the spring the king of Syria will attack you.”

“ Son of man, because Tyre has said about Jerusalem,‘ Aha, the gateway of the peoples is broken; it has swung open to me. I will become rich, now that she has been destroyed,’therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: Look, I am against you, O Tyre! I will bring up many nations against you, as the sea brings up its waves.

Assyria, the club I use to vent my anger, is as good as dead, a cudgel with which I angrily punish.I sent him against a godless nation, I ordered him to attack the people with whom I was angry, to take plunder and to carry away loot, to trample them down like dirt in the streets.But he does not agree with this, his mind does not reason this way, for his goal is to destroy, and to eliminate many nations.

For they harass the one whom you discipline; they spread the news about the suffering of those whom you punish.

I did not spend my time in the company of other people, laughing and having a good time. I stayed to myself because I felt obligated to you and because I was filled with anger at what they had done.Why must I continually suffer such painful anguish? Why must I endure the sting of their insults like an incurable wound? Will you let me down when I need you like a brook one goes to for water, but that cannot be relied on?”

When King Jehoshaphat of Judah returned home safely to Jerusalem,the prophet Jehu son of Hanani confronted him; he said to King Jehoshaphat,“ Is it right to help the wicked and be an ally of those who oppose the LORD? Because you have done this the LORD is angry with you!

The LORD was angry at Amaziah and sent a prophet to him, who said,“ Why are you following these gods that could not deliver their own people from your power?”While he was speaking, Amaziah said to him,“ Did we appoint you to be a royal counselor? Stop prophesying or else you will be killed!” So the prophet stopped, but added,“ I know that the LORD has decided to destroy you, because you have done this thing and refused to listen to my advice.”

But the LORD said,“ What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground!

Now a prophet visited King Ahab of Israel and said,“ This is what the LORD says,‘ Do you see this huge army? Look, I am going to hand it over to you this very day. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
