A prophet of the LORD named Oded was there. He went out to meet the army that came to Samaria and said to them,“ Look, the LORD God of your ancestors handed them over to you because of his wrath against Judah, but you slaughtered them in a rage that has reached heaven.

But you have gone too far, killing them without mercy, and all heaven is disturbed.

Oded, a prophet of the LORD, was there. He went to meet the army as they arrived in Samaria and said to them:“ Look, because the LORD God of your ancestors was angry with Judah he handed them over to you. You have killed them so mercilessly that God has taken notice.

But a prophet of Yahweh was there, whose name was Oded; and he went out to meet the army that came to Samaria, and said to them,“ Behold, because Yahweh, the God of your fathers, was angry with Judah, he has delivered them into your hand, and you have slain them in a rage which has reached up to heaven.

I was angry with my people; I profaned my possession, and I handed them over to you. You showed them no mercy; you made your yoke very heavy on the elderly.

For her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.

And I said: My God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face toward you, my God, because our iniquities are higher than our heads and our guilt is as high as the heavens.

I am fiercely angry with the nations that are at ease, for I was a little angry, but they made the destruction worse.

“‘ This is what the Lord GOD says: Because Edom acted vengefully against the house of Judah and incurred grievous guilt by taking revenge on them,therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off both people and animals from it. I will make it a wasteland; they will fall by the sword from Teman to Dedan.I will take my vengeance on Edom through my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom according to my anger and wrath. So they will know my vengeance. This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.“‘ This is what the Lord GOD says: Because the Philistines acted in vengeance and took revenge with deep contempt, destroying because of their perpetual hatred,therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines, cutting off the Cherethites and wiping out what remains of the coastal peoples.I will execute severe vengeance against them with furious rebukes. They will know that I am the LORD when I take my vengeance on them.’”

You will be covered with shame and destroyed forever because of violence done to your brother Jacob.On the day you stood aloof, on the day strangers captured his wealth, while foreigners entered his city gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them.Do not gloat over your brother in the day of his calamity; do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction; do not boastfully mock in the day of distress.Do not enter my people’s city gate in the day of their disaster. Yes, you— do not gloat over their misery in the day of their disaster, and do not appropriate their possessions in the day of their disaster.Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, and do not hand over their survivors in the day of distress.For the day of the LORD is near, against all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; what you deserve will return on your own head.As you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and gulp down and be as though they had never been.

The LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them to King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites served him eight years.

The prophet said to him,“ This is what the LORD says:‘ Because you released from your hand the man I had set apart for destruction, it will be your life in place of his life and your people in place of his people.’”

Then the prophet Isaiah came to King Hezekiah and asked him,“ Where did these men come from and what did they say to you?” Hezekiah replied,“ They came from a distant country, from Babylon.”Isaiah asked,“ What have they seen in your palace?” Hezekiah answered,“ They have seen everything in my palace. There isn’t anything in my treasuries that I didn’t show them.”

And they said,“ Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let’s make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered throughout the earth.”

So the LORD his God handed Ahaz over to the king of Aram. He attacked him and took many captives to Damascus. Ahaz was also handed over to the king of Israel, who struck him with great force:

The prophet approached the king of Israel and said to him,“ Go and strengthen yourself, then consider carefully what you should do, for in the spring the king of Aram will attack you.”

“ Son of man, because Tyre said about Jerusalem,‘ Aha! The gateway to the peoples is shattered. She has been turned over to me. I will be filled now that she lies in ruins,’therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: See, I am against you, Tyre! I will raise up many nations against you, just as the sea raises its waves.

Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger— the staff in their hands is my wrath.I will send him against a godless nation; I will command him to go against a people destined for my rage, to take spoils, to plunder, and to trample them down like clay in the streets.But this is not what he intends; this is not what he plans. It is his intent to destroy and to cut off many nations.

For they persecute the one you struck and talk about the pain of those you wounded.

I never sat with the band of revelers, and I did not celebrate with them. Because your hand was on me, I sat alone, for you filled me with indignation.Why has my pain become unending, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? You truly have become like a mirage to me— water that is not reliable.

King Jehoshaphat of Judah returned to his home in Jerusalem in peace.Then Jehu son of the seer Hanani went out to confront him and said to King Jehoshaphat,“ Do you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, the LORD’s wrath is on you.

So the LORD’s anger was against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him, who said,“ Why have you sought a people’s gods that could not rescue their own people from you?”While he was still speaking to him, the king asked,“ Have we made you the king’s counselor? Stop, why should you lose your life?” So the prophet stopped, but he said,“ I know that God intends to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my advice.”

Then he said,“ What have you done? Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!

A prophet approached King Ahab of Israel and said,“ This is what the LORD says:‘ Do you see this whole huge army? Watch, I am handing it over to you today so that you may know that I am the LORD.’”
