About this time King Hazael of Aram went to war against Gath and captured it. Then he turned to attack Jerusalem.King Joash collected all the sacred objects that Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, the previous kings of Judah, had dedicated, along with what he himself had dedicated. He sent them all to Hazael, along with all the gold in the treasuries of the Lord’s Temple and the royal palace. So Hazael called off his attack on Jerusalem.

Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth!Serve the Lord with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling.

But after Jehoiada’s death, the leaders of Judah came and bowed before King Joash and persuaded him to listen to their advice.They decided to abandon the Temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and they worshiped Asherah poles and idols instead! Because of this sin, divine anger fell on Judah and Jerusalem.

I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.’

I say,‘ You are gods; you are all children of the Most High.But you will die like mere mortals and fall like every other ruler.’”

Afterward the prophet said to King Ahab,“ Get ready for another attack. Begin making plans now, for the king of Aram will come back next spring.”

The godly will rejoice when they see injustice avenged. They will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked.Then at last everyone will say,“ There truly is a reward for those who live for God; surely there is a God who judges justly here on earth.”
