Yet the Lord sent prophets to bring them back to him. The prophets warned them, but still the people would not listen.

Although the Lord sent prophets to the people to bring them back to him, and though they testified against them, they would not listen.

The Lord sent prophets to the people to bring them back to him. The prophets told the people what they were doing wrong. But the people wouldn’t listen.

Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the Lord. These testified against them, but they would not pay attention.

“ Listen to me, my people. Hear me, Israel, for my law will be proclaimed, and my justice will become a light to the nations.

Who will hear these lessons from the past and see the ruin that awaits you in the future?

For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes— so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.’“ But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear.

and if you will not listen to my servants, the prophets— for I sent them again and again to warn you, but you would not listen to them—

From the day your ancestors left Egypt until now, I have continued to send my servants, the prophets— day in and day out.But my people have not listened to me or even tried to hear. They have been stubborn and sinful— even worse than their ancestors.

“ Again and again I sent my servants, the prophets, to plead with them,‘ Don’t do these horrible things that I hate so much.’But my people would not listen or turn back from their wicked ways. They kept on burning incense to these gods.

for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care. If only you would listen to his voice today!The Lord says,“ Don’t harden your hearts as Israel did at Meribah, as they did at Massah in the wilderness.

“ But Abraham said,‘ If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Again and again the Lord had sent his prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah:“ Turn from all your evil ways. Obey my commands and decrees— the entire law that I commanded your ancestors to obey, and that I gave you through my servants the prophets.”But the Israelites would not listen. They were as stubborn as their ancestors who had refused to believe in the Lord their God.They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors, and they despised all his warnings. They worshiped worthless idols, so they became worthless themselves. They followed the example of the nations around them, disobeying the Lord’s command not to imitate them.

“ But despite all this, they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They turned their backs on your Law, they killed your prophets who warned them to return to you, and they committed terrible blasphemies.

Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

“ Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.

What sorrow awaits you! For you build monuments for the prophets your own ancestors killed long ago.But in fact, you stand as witnesses who agree with what your ancestors did. They killed the prophets, and you join in their crime by building the monuments!This is what God in his wisdom said about you:‘ I will send prophets and apostles to them, but they will kill some and persecute the others.’“ As a result, this generation will be held responsible for the murder of all God’s prophets from the creation of the world—from the murder of Abel to the murder of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, it will certainly be charged against this generation.

Listen to me; listen, and pay close attention.

The Lord, the God of their ancestors, repeatedly sent his prophets to warn them, for he had compassion on his people and his Temple.But the people mocked these messengers of God and despised their words. They scoffed at the prophets until the Lord’s anger could no longer be restrained and nothing could be done.

Now Jesus turned to the people again and told them this story:“ A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and moved to another country to live for several years.At the time of the grape harvest, he sent one of his servants to collect his share of the crop. But the farmers attacked the servant, beat him up, and sent him back empty handed.So the owner sent another servant, but they also insulted him, beat him up, and sent him away empty handed.A third man was sent, and they wounded him and chased him away.“‘ What will I do?’ the owner asked himself.‘ I know! I’ll send my cherished son. Surely they will respect him.’“ But when the tenant farmers saw his son, they said to each other,‘ Here comes the heir to this estate. Let’s kill him and get the estate for ourselves!’So they dragged him out of the vineyard and murdered him.“ What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do to them?” Jesus asked.
