約阿施登極的時候、才七歲。耶戶七年、約阿施登極作王；他在耶路撒冷作王四十年。他母親名叫西比亞，是別是巴人。儘祭司耶何耶大指教他的日子，約阿施都行永恆主所看為對的事。只是邱壇還沒有廢去；人民仍在邱壇上宰牲燻祭。約阿施對祭司們說：『凡奉進永恆主的殿分別為聖之物所值的銀子、無論是各人被估價的銀子、就是人身被估價的銀子，或是人心裏起意要奉進永恆主之殿的銀子，祭司都要收來，各從所熟識的人去收，來修理聖殿破壞之處，修理見有破壞的一切地方。』無奈到了約阿施王二十三年、祭司仍未修理聖殿破壞的地方。於是約阿施王把祭司耶何耶大和祭司們召了來，對他們說：『你們怎麼不修理聖殿破壞的地方呢？現在你們不要再從熟識的人收銀子了，乃要將所收的交出來，作修理破壞地方之用。』祭司就答應不再從人民收銀子，也不修理聖殿破壞的地方。祭司耶何耶大就取了一個櫃子，在櫃門上鑽了一個窟窿，放在柱旁，在人進永恆主之殿南邊；把守門檻的祭司將奉進永恆主之殿的一切銀子都投在那裏。他們見櫃裏的銀子多了，便叫王的祕書和大祭司上來，將永恆主殿裏所得的銀子鑄成錠塊，加以數算；把所平的銀子交在辦事的人、永恆主殿裏監工的人、手裏，讓他們支給照料永恆主之殿的木匠和建築的人，也給土匠、和鑿石的人，又買木料和鑿成的石頭，來修理永恆主之殿破壞的地方，也做修理聖殿一切開支的用處。不過奉進永恆主之殿的銀子並沒有用來作永恆主殿裏的銀碗盆、蠟燭剪子、碗、號筒、和各樣金器銀器，乃是將那銀子交給辦事的人去修理永恆主的殿。他們並且不跟經手收銀去給工人的算賬，因為經手人作事忠實可靠。
