Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah.

Jehoshaphat was alarmed. So he decided to ask the Lord for advice. He told all the people of Judah to go without eating.

Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

Jehoshaphat was terrified by this news and begged the Lord for guidance. He also ordered everyone in Judah to begin fasting.

So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and petitions, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.

When they gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out in the LORD’s presence. They fasted that day, and there they confessed,“ We have sinned against the LORD.” And Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.

In the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people of Jerusalem and all those coming in from Judah’s cities into Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the LORD.

Even now— this is the LORD’s declaration— turn to me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning.Tear your hearts, not just your clothes, and return to the LORD your God. For he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in faithful love, and he relents from sending disaster.Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him, so you can offer a grain offering and a drink offering to the LORD your God.Blow the ram’s horn in Zion! Announce a sacred fast; proclaim a solemn assembly.Gather the people; sanctify the congregation; assemble the aged; gather the infants, even babies nursing at the breast. Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; he divided the people with him into two camps, along with the flocks, herds, and camels.He thought,“ If Esau comes to one camp and attacks it, the remaining one can escape.”Then Jacob said,“ God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said to me,‘ Go back to your land and to your family, and I will cause you to prosper,’I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. Indeed, I crossed over the Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two camps.Please rescue me from my brother Esau, for I am afraid of him; otherwise, he may come and attack me, the mothers, and their children.

Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.When the man saw that he could not defeat him, he struck Jacob’s hip socket as they wrestled and dislocated his hip.Then he said to Jacob,“ Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob said,“ I will not let you go unless you bless me.”“ What is your name?” the man asked.“ Jacob,” he replied.“ Your name will no longer be Jacob,” he said.“ It will be Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.”

The men were seized by great fear of the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.

I proclaimed a fast by the Ahava River, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us, our dependents, and all our possessions.I did this because I was ashamed to ask the king for infantry and cavalry to protect us from enemies during the journey, since we had told him,“ The hand of our God is gracious to all who seek him, but his fierce anger is against all who abandon him.”So we fasted and pleaded with our God about this, and he was receptive to our prayer.

Therefore offer a prayer for the surviving remnant.’”So the servants of King Hezekiah went to Isaiah,who said to them,“ Tell your master,‘ The LORD says this: Don’t be afraid because of the words you have heard, with which the king of Assyria’s attendants have blasphemed me.

Those from every tribe of Israel who had determined in their hearts to seek the LORD their God followed the Levites to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the LORD, the God of their ancestors.

The whole Israelite army went to Bethel where they wept and sat before the LORD. They fasted that day until evening and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the LORD.

Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

When I am afraid, I will trust in you.In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
