於是，他們呼求耶和華說：「我們背棄我們的上帝去祭拜巴力，我們得罪了你。」耶和華對他們說：「你們受埃及人、亞摩利人、亞捫人、非利士人、西頓人、亞瑪力人和馬雲人的壓迫，就呼求我，我豈沒有拯救你們嗎？但你們竟背棄我，去事奉別的神明，所以我不再救你們。你們去呼求自己選擇的神明吧！你們有難，讓他們救你們吧！」他們對耶和華說：「我們犯了罪，任你處置我們，只求你今天拯救我們。」以色列人除掉了他們的外邦神像，轉而事奉耶和華。耶和華不忍再看以色列人受苦。

但祂聽見他們在苦難中呼求時，仍然眷顧他們。

以色列啊，你被自己的罪惡絆倒了，歸向你的上帝耶和華吧！你要歸向耶和華，向祂懺悔說：「求你赦免我們的罪，施恩悅納我們，好叫我們以讚美為祭獻給你！我們不再向亞述求救，不再依靠戰馬，也不再稱自己所造的神像為我們的上帝。耶和華啊，只有在你那裡，孤兒才能得到憐憫。」

他們向耶和華呼求，耶和華就使一位名叫俄陀聶的拯救者興起，他是迦勒弟弟基納斯的兒子。耶和華的靈降在俄陀聶身上，他就做了以色列的士師，領兵出戰。耶和華將美索不達米亞王古珊·利薩田交在他手中，他便戰勝了古珊·利薩田。
