After Rehoboam’s position as king was established and he had become strong, he and all Israel with him abandoned the law of the Lord.

Rehoboam had made his position as king secure. He had become very strong. Then he turned away from the law of the Lord. So did all the people of Judah.

He entered the LORD’s temple to offer incense on the incense altar.

Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD. They made him more jealous by their sins than their ancestors had done.They even built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.There were also male cultic prostitutes in the land. They committed the same horrible sins as the nations that the LORD had driven out from before the Israelites.

When they were fed, they became satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud; as a result, they forgot me!So I will pounce on them like a lion; like a leopard I will lurk by the path.I will attack them like a bear robbed of her cubs– I will rip open their chests. I will devour them there like a lion– like a wild animal would tear them apart.

Others will then answer,‘ Because they abandoned the LORD their God, who led their ancestors out of Egypt. They embraced other gods whom they worshiped and served. That is why the LORD has brought all this disaster down on them.’”

You people of this generation, listen to what the LORD says.“ Have I been like a wilderness to you, Israel? Have I been like a dark and dangerous land to you? Why then do you say,‘ We are free to wander. We will not come to you any more?’

You implement the regulations of Omri, and all the practices of Ahab’s dynasty; you follow their policies. Therefore I will make you an appalling sight, the city’s inhabitants will be taunted derisively, and nations will mock all of you.”

The princes of Judah are like those who move boundary markers. I will pour out my rage on them like a torrential flood!Ephraim will be oppressed, crushed under judgment, because he was determined to pursue worthless idols.

You will eat your fill and then praise the LORD your God because of the good land he has given you.Be sure you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today.When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses,when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything,be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery,

Then when the LORD your God brings you to the land he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give you– a land with large, fine cities you did not build,houses filled with choice things you did not accumulate, hewn out cisterns you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant– and you eat your fill,be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of Egypt, that place of slavery.

Judah also failed to keep the commandments of the LORD their God; they followed Israel’s example.

But Jeshurun became fat and kicked, you got fat, thick, and stuffed! Then he deserted the God who made him, and treated the Rock who saved him with contempt.

You have forgotten the Rock who fathered you, and put out of mind the God who gave you birth.
