After Rehoboam’s position as king was established and he had become strong, he and all Israel with him abandoned the law of the Lord.

Rehoboam had made his position as king secure. He had become very strong. Then he turned away from the law of the Lord. So did all the people of Judah.

By the sins they committed they stirred up his jealous anger more than those who were before them had done.They also set up for themselves high places, sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree.There were even male shrine prostitutes in the land; the people engaged in all the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. When I fed them, they were satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud; then they forgot me.So I will be like a lion to them, like a leopard I will lurk by the path.Like a bear robbed of her cubs, I will attack them and rip them open; like a lion I will devour them— a wild animal will tear them apart.
