When all Israel realized that the king had refused to listen to them, they responded,“ Down with the dynasty of David! We have no interest in the son of Jesse. Back to your homes, O Israel! Look out for your own house, O David!” So all the people of Israel returned home.

When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:“ What share do we have in David, what part in Jesse’s son? To your tents, Israel! Look after your own house, David!” So all the Israelites went home.

All the Israelites saw that the king refused to listen to them. So they answered the king. They said,“ We don’t have any share in David’s royal family. We don’t have any share in Jesse’s son. People of Israel, let’s go back to our homes. David’s royal family, take care of your own kingdom!” So all the Israelites went home.

And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king,“ What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Each of you to your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So all Israel went to their tents.

When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people answered the king: What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Israel, each to your tent; David, look after your own house now! So all Israel went to their tents.

When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people replied to the king, saying,“ What share do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Everyone to your tents, Israel! Now look after your own house, David!” So all Israel went away to their tents.

Now when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying:“ What share have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to your tents, O Israel! Now see to your own house, O David!” So all Israel departed to their tents.

And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So all Israel departed unto their tents.

When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people answered the king: What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Israel, each man to your tent; David, look after your own house now! So all Israel went to their tents.

And when all Israel[ saw] that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and[ we have] none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel:[ and] now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.

When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, the people answered the king,“ We have no portion in David– no share in the son of Jesse! Return to your homes, O Israel! Now, look after your own dynasty, O David!” So all Israel returned to their homes.

When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying,“ What portion do we have in David? We don’t have an inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel departed to their tents.

And to this day the northern tribes of Israel have refused to be ruled by a descendant of David.

There happened to be a troublemaker there named Sheba son of Bicri, a man from the tribe of Benjamin. Sheba blew a ram’s horn and began to chant:“ Down with the dynasty of David! We have no interest in the son of Jesse. Come on, you men of Israel, back to your homes!”

For Christ must reign until he humbles all his enemies beneath his feet.

I will preserve an heir for him; his throne will be as endless as the days of heaven.But if his descendants forsake my instructions and fail to obey my regulations,if they do not obey my decrees and fail to keep my commands,then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their disobedience with beating.But I will never stop loving him nor fail to keep my promise to him.No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said.I have sworn an oath to David, and in my holiness I cannot lie:His dynasty will go on forever; his kingdom will endure as the sun.It will be as eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!” Interlude

“ Why have you and the son of Jesse conspired against me?” Saul demanded.“ Why did you give him food and a sword? Why have you consulted God for him? Why have you encouraged him to kill me, as he is trying to do this very day?”

Human defiance only enhances your glory, for you use it as a weapon.

Saul boiled with rage at Jonathan.“ You stupid son of a whore!” he swore at him.“ Do you think I don’t know that you want him to be king in your place, shaming yourself and your mother?As long as that son of Jesse is alive, you’ll never be king. Now go and get him so I can kill him!”

And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king— bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’”

But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.

When all Israel realized that the king had refused to listen to them, they responded,“ Down with the dynasty of David! We have no interest in the son of Jesse. Back to your homes, O Israel! Look out for your own house, O David!” So the people of Israel returned home.But Rehoboam continued to rule over the Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.

Then David said to Abishai and to all his servants,“ My own son is trying to kill me. Doesn’t this relative of Saul have even more reason to do so? Leave him alone and let him curse, for the Lord has told him to do it.

“‘ But I will not take the entire kingdom from Solomon at this time. For the sake of my servant David, the one whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees, I will keep Solomon as leader for the rest of his life.But I will take the kingdom away from his son and give ten of the tribes to you.His son will have one tribe so that the descendants of David my servant will continue to reign, shining like a lamp in Jerusalem, the city I have chosen to be the place for my name.And I will place you on the throne of Israel, and you will rule over all that your heart desires.If you listen to what I tell you and follow my ways and do whatever I consider to be right, and if you obey my decrees and commands, as my servant David did, then I will always be with you. I will establish an enduring dynasty for you as I did for David, and I will give Israel to you.Because of Solomon’s sin I will punish the descendants of David— though not forever.’”

He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”

But this is what the Lord says: I would no more reject my people than I would change my laws that govern night and day, earth and sky.I will never abandon the descendants of Jacob or David, my servant, or change the plan that David’s descendants will rule the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Instead, I will restore them to their land and have mercy on them.”

But my favor will not be taken from him as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from your sight.Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’”

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!

Then the meeting broke up, and everybody went home.

Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans?The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.“ Let us break their chains,” they cry,“ and free ourselves from slavery to God.”But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them.Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury.For the Lord declares,“ I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.”

At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.

“ My servant David will be their king, and they will have only one shepherd. They will obey my regulations and be careful to keep my decrees.They will live in the land I gave my servant Jacob, the land where their ancestors lived. They and their children and their grandchildren after them will live there forever, generation after generation. And my servant David will be their prince forever.

Here I will increase the power of David; my anointed one will be a light for my people.

“ In that day I will restore the fallen house of David. I will repair its damaged walls. From the ruins I will rebuild it and restore its former glory.

“ I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.”

A messenger soon arrived in Jerusalem to tell David,“ All Israel has joined Absalom in a conspiracy against you!”

And even so, I will not take away the entire kingdom; I will let him be king of one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, my chosen city.”

“ This is what the Lord says: If you can break my covenant with the day and the night so that one does not follow the other,only then will my covenant with my servant David be broken. Only then will he no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne. The same is true for my covenant with the Levitical priests who minister before me.

Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot— yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.

Then Doeg the Edomite, who was standing there with Saul’s men, spoke up.“ When I was at Nob,” he said,“ I saw the son of Jesse talking to the priest, Ahimelech son of Ahitub.

I will confirm him as king over my house and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.’”

Nor did they show any loyalty to the family of Jerub baal( that is, Gideon), despite all the good he had done for Israel.

But when David’s place was empty again the next day, Saul asked Jonathan,“ Why hasn’t the son of Jesse been here for the meal either yesterday or today?”

“ Listen here, you men of Benjamin!” Saul shouted to his officers when he heard the news.“ Has that son of Jesse promised every one of you fields and vineyards? Has he promised to make you all generals and captains in his army?

But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say,‘ We do not want him to be our king.’
