This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.

They will place their hope on him.”I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Are they servants of Christ? I know I sound like a madman, but I have served him far more! I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again.Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty nine lashes.Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not.I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.

It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people.

“ Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress.He led them straight to safety, to a city where they could live.Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery.They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High.That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them.“ Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains.Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron.Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins.They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door.“ Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death.Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts.Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world.They, too, observed the Lord’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas.He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves.Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror.They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end.“ Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor!Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation.He changes rivers into deserts, and springs of water into dry, thirsty land.He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands, because of the wickedness of those who live there.But he also turns deserts into pools of water, the dry land into springs of water.He brings the hungry to settle there and to build their cities.They sow their fields, plant their vineyards, and harvest their bumper crops.How he blesses them! They raise large families there, and their herds of livestock increase.When they decrease in number and become impoverished through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,the Lord pours contempt on their princes, causing them to wander in trackless wastelands.But he rescues the poor from trouble and increases their families like flocks of sheep.The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are struck silent.Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the Lord.

Consult together, argue your case. Get together and decide what to say. Who made these things known so long ago? What idol ever told you they would happen? Was it not I, the Lord? For there is no other God but me, a righteous God and Savior. There is none but me.Let all the world look to me for salvation! For I am God; there is no other.

“ I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair.We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.

O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, what joy for those who trust in you.

But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God’s unfailing love.

If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you.If you suffer, however, it must not be for murder, stealing, making trouble, or prying into other people’s affairs.

And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained.So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen.

We live in such a way that no one will stumble because of us, and no one will find fault with our ministry.In everything we do, we show that we are true ministers of God. We patiently endure troubles and hardships and calamities of every kind.We have been beaten, been put in prison, faced angry mobs, worked to exhaustion, endured sleepless nights, and gone without food.We prove ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, by the Holy Spirit within us, and by our sincere love.We faithfully preach the truth. God’s power is working in us. We use the weapons of righteousness in the right hand for attack and the left hand for defense.We serve God whether people honor us or despise us, whether they slander us or praise us. We are honest, but they call us impostors.We are ignored, even though we are well known. We live close to death, but we are still alive. We have been beaten, but we have not been killed.Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything.

so that if I am delayed, you will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth.

See, God has come to save me. I will trust in him and not be afraid. The Lord God is my strength and my song; he has given me victory.”

So let us go out to him, outside the camp, and bear the disgrace he bore.

He trusted God, so let God rescue him now if he wants him! For he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”

Has the Lord redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.

Instead, I sometimes think God has put us apostles on display, like prisoners of war at the end of a victor’s parade, condemned to die. We have become a spectacle to the entire world— to people and angels alike.Our dedication to Christ makes us look like fools, but you claim to be so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are so powerful! You are honored, but we are ridiculed.Even now we go hungry and thirsty, and we don’t have enough clothes to keep warm. We are often beaten and have no home.We work wearily with our own hands to earn our living. We bless those who curse us. We are patient with those who abuse us.We appeal gently when evil things are said about us. Yet we are treated like the world’s garbage, like everybody’s trash— right up to the present moment.

Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O Lord.

Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.

The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him.

But you, Timothy, certainly know what I teach, and how I live, and what my purpose in life is. You know my faith, my patience, my love, and my endurance.You know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra— but the Lord rescued me from all of it.Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

Who among you fears the Lord and obeys his servant? If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God.

The Lord helps them, rescuing them from the wicked. He saves them, and they find shelter in him.

He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.

Then Nebuchadnezzar said,“ Praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He sent his angel to rescue his servants who trusted in him. They defied the king’s command and were willing to die rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.
