As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer

Timothy, stay there in Ephesus. That is what I told you to do when I went into Macedonia. I want you to command certain people not to teach things that aren’t true.

As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine,

If someone spreads false teachings and does not agree with sound words( that is, those of our Lord Jesus Christ) and with the teaching that accords with godliness,

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are following a different gospel–not that there really is another gospel, but there are some who are disturbing you and wanting to distort the gospel of Christ.

He must hold firmly to the faithful message as it has been taught, so that he will be able to give exhortation in such healthy teaching and correct those who speak against it.For there are many rebellious people, idle talkers, and deceivers, especially those with Jewish connections,who must be silenced because they mislead whole families by teaching for dishonest gain what ought not to be taught.

Therefore, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him,rooted and built up in him and firm in your faith just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.Be careful not to allow anyone to captivate you through an empty, deceitful philosophy that is according to human traditions and the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.For in him all the fullness of deity lives in bodily form,and you have been filled in him, who is the head over every ruler and authority.In him you also were circumcised– not, however, with a circumcision performed by human hands, but by the removal of the fleshly body, that is, through the circumcision done by Christ.

After the disturbance had ended, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them and saying farewell, he left to go to Macedonia.After he had gone through those regions and spoken many words of encouragement to the believers there, he came to Greece,where he stayed for three months. Because the Jews had made a plot against him as he was intending to sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.

Reinforce these commands, so that they will be beyond reproach.

While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul went through the inland regions and came to Ephesus. He found some disciples thereand said to them,“ Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They replied,“ No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”So Paul said,“ Into what then were you baptized?”“ Into John’s baptism,” they replied.Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.”When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus,and when Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy.( Now there were about twelve men in all.)So Paul entered the synagogue and spoke out fearlessly for three months, addressing and convincing them about the kingdom of God.But when some were stubborn and refused to believe, reviling the Way before the congregation, he left them and took the disciples with him, addressing them every day in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.This went on for two years, so that all who lived in the province of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the word of the Lord.

So we are no longer to be children, tossed back and forth by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching by the trickery of people who craftily carry out their deceitful schemes.

Command those who are rich in this world’s goods not to be haughty or to set their hope on riches, which are uncertain, but on God who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment.

“ To the angel of the church in Ephesus, write the following:“ This is the solemn pronouncement of the one who has a firm grasp on the seven stars in his right hand– the one who walks among the seven golden lampstands:‘ I know your works as well as your labor and steadfast endurance, and that you cannot tolerate evil. You have even put to the test those who refer to themselves as apostles( but are not), and have discovered that they are false.

But I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and by her teaching deceives my servants to commit sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.

though I am confident in the Lord that I too will be coming to see you soon.

But I have a few things against you: You have some people there who follow the teaching of Balaam, who instructed Balak to put a stumbling block before the people of Israel so they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality.

Command and teach these things.

When they reached Ephesus, Paul left Priscilla and Aquila behind there, but he himself went into the synagogue and addressed the Jews.

For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains.

By pointing out such things to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, having nourished yourself on the words of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
