Look, the pay you have held back from the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.

So I say this, and insist in the Lord, that you no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.

The fact that you have lawsuits among yourselves demonstrates that you have already been defeated. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?But you yourselves wrong and cheat, and you do this to your brothers and sisters!Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? You must not oppress your neighbor or commit robbery against him. You must not withhold the wages of the hired laborer overnight until morning.

Indeed Israel is the vineyard of the LORD who commands armies, the people of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight. He waited for justice, but look what he got– disobedience! He waited for fairness, but look what he got– cries for help!

If a man is found kidnapping a person from among his fellow Israelites, and regards him as mere property and sells him, that kidnapper must die. In this way you will purge evil from among you.

Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.

The LORD abhors differing weights, and dishonest scales are wicked.

But I will warn you whom you should fear: Fear the one who, after the killing, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

Do not exploit a poor person because he is poor and do not crush the needy in court,for the LORD will plead their case and will rob those who are robbing them.

If you see the extortion of the poor, or the perversion of justice and fairness in the government, do not be astonished by the matter. For the high official is watched by a higher official, and there are higher ones over them!

The one who robs his father and mother and says,“ There is no transgression,” is a companion to the one who destroys.

But you have dishonored the poor! Are not the rich oppressing you and dragging you into the courts?

The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but an accurate weight is his delight.

O LORD, the God who avenges! O God who avenges, reveal your splendor!

envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things. I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God!

Everyone must be on his guard around his friends. He must not even trust any of his relatives. For every one of them will find some way to cheat him. And all of his friends will tell lies about him.

If you make a sale to your fellow citizen or buy from your fellow citizen, no one is to wrong his brother.

Stop oppressing foreigners who live in your land, children who have lost their fathers, and women who have lost their husbands. Stop killing innocent people in this land. Stop paying allegiance to other gods. That will only bring about your ruin.

You say,“ When will the new moon festival be over, so we can sell grain? When will the Sabbath end, so we can open up the grain bins? We’re eager to sell less for a higher price, and to cheat the buyer with rigged scales!We’re eager to trade silver for the poor, a pair of sandals for the needy! We want to mix in some chaff with the grain!”

“‘ You must not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your fellow citizen.

I know that the LORD defends the cause of the oppressed and vindicates the poor.

“ It’s worthless! It’s worthless!” says the buyer, but when he goes on his way, he boasts.

No one is concerned about justice; no one sets forth his case truthfully. They depend on false words and tell lies; they conceive of oppression and give birth to sin.They hatch the eggs of a poisonous snake and spin a spider’s web. Whoever eats their eggs will die, a poisonous snake is hatched.Their webs cannot be used for clothing; they cannot cover themselves with what they make. Their deeds are sinful; they commit violent crimes.They are eager to do evil, quick to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are sinful; they crush and destroy.

The one who steals must steal no longer; rather he must labor, doing good with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with the one who has need.

You must not have in your bag different stone weights, a heavy and a light one.You must not have in your house different measuring containers, a large and a small one.You must have an accurate and correct stone weight and an accurate and correct measuring container, so that your life may be extended in the land the LORD your God is about to give you.For anyone who acts dishonestly in these ways is abhorrent to the LORD your God.

Your officials are rebels, they associate with thieves. All of them love bribery, and look for payoffs. They do not take up the cause of the orphan, or defend the rights of the widow.Therefore, the sovereign LORD who commands armies, the powerful ruler of Israel, says this:“ Ah, I will seek vengeance against my adversaries, I will take revenge against my enemies.
