He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

For I think God has displayed us, the apostles, in last place, like men condemned to die: We have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to people.We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored!Up to the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty; we are poorly clothed, roughly treated, homeless;we labor, working with our own hands. When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;when we are slandered, we respond graciously. Even now, we are like the scum of the earth, like everyone’s garbage.

But you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, and endurance,along with the persecutions and sufferings that came to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured— and yet the Lord rescued me from them all.In fact, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

For this reason we have been comforted. In addition to our own comfort, we rejoiced even more over the joy Titus had, because his spirit was refreshed by all of you.

Are they servants of Christ? I’m talking like a madman— I’m a better one: with far more labors, many more imprisonments, far worse beatings, many times near death.Five times I received the forty lashes minus one from the Jews.Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I received a stoning. Three times I was shipwrecked. I have spent a night and a day in the open sea.On frequent journeys, I faced dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my own people, dangers from Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, and dangers among false brothers;toil and hardship, many sleepless nights, hunger and thirst, often without food, cold, and without clothing.Not to mention other things, there is the daily pressure on me: my concern for all the churches.

Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, including a large number of God-fearing Greeks, as well as a number of the leading women.But the Jews became jealous, and they brought together some wicked men from the marketplace, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. Attacking Jason’s house, they searched for them to bring them out to the public assembly.When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting,“ These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too,and Jason has welcomed them. They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king— Jesus.”The crowd and city officials who heard these things were upset.After taking a security bond from Jason and the others, they released them.As soon as it was night, the brothers and sisters sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. Upon arrival, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.

But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the arrival of Titus,and not only by his arrival but also by the comfort he received from you. He told us about your deep longing, your sorrow, and your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced even more.
