We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority.

We were not expecting people to praise us. We were not looking for praise from you or anyone else. Yet as Christ’s apostles, we could have used our authority over you.

Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ.

As for human praise, we have never sought it from you or anyone else.

How can you believe, when you accept glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?

I do not receive glory from people;

Therefore, though I have enough confidence in Christ to order you to do what is proper,yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you— since I am such a person as Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus—

For am I now seeking the favor of people, or of God? Or am I striving to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a bond servant of Christ.

For you recall, brothers and sisters, our labor and hardship: it was by working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, that we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?If I am not an apostle to others, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

If others share the right over you, do we not more? Nevertheless, we did not use this right, but we endure all things so that we will cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ.Do you not know that those who perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share from the altar?So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.But I have used none of these things. And I have not written these things so that it will be done so in my case; for it would be better for me to die than that. No one shall make my boast an empty one!For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast about, for I am under compulsion; for woe to me if I do not preach the gospel.For if I do this voluntarily, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a commission nonetheless.What, then, is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may offer the gospel without charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond servants on account of Jesus.

Do we not have a right to eat and drink?Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?Or do only Barnabas and I have no right to refrain from working?

Now I, Paul, myself urge you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ— I who am meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent!I ask that when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I intend to be courageous against some, who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh.
