They said to him,“ You are old. Your sons don’t live as you do. So appoint a king to lead us. We want a king just like the kings all the other nations have.”

“ Look,” they told him,“ you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have.”

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say,“ Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,”be sure to appoint over you a king the Lord your God chooses. He must be from among your fellow Israelites. Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not an Israelite.

From the rocky peaks I see them, from the heights I view them. I see a people who live apart and do not consider themselves one of the nations.

But the people refused to listen to Samuel.“ No!” they said.“ We want a king over us.Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”

Is it not wheat harvest now? I will call on the Lord to send thunder and rain. And you will realize what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”

But when they said,“ Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord.And the Lord told him:“ Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.

Where is your king, that he may save you? Where are your rulers in all your towns, of whom you said,‘ Give me a king and princes’?So in my anger I gave you a king, and in my wrath I took him away.
