He said,“ Here are the policies of the king who will rule over you: He will conscript your sons and put them in his chariot forces and in his cavalry; they will run in front of his chariot.

He said,“ This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.

Samuel told them,“ Here’s what the king who rules over you will expect to be done for him. He will take your sons. He’ll make them serve with his chariots and horses. They will run in front of his chariots.

He said,“ These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots.

“ This is how a king will reign over you,” Samuel said.“ The king will draft your sons and assign them to his chariots and his charioteers, making them run before his chariots.

He said,“ These are the rights of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and put them to his use in his chariots, on his horses, or running in front of his chariots.

And he said,“ This will be the practice of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and put them in his chariots for himself and among his horsemen, and they will run before his chariots.

And he said,“ This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots.

And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots;

He said,“ These are the rights of the king who will rule over you: He will take your sons and put them to his use in his chariots, on his horses, or running in front of his chariots.

And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint[ them] for himself, for his chariots, and[ to be] his horsemen; and[ some] shall run before his chariots.

He said,“ This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them as his servants, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they will run before his chariots.

Then Samuel talked to the people about how the kingship would work. He wrote it all down on a scroll and set it before the LORD. Then Samuel sent all the people away to their homes.

There was fierce war with the Philistines all the days of Saul. So whenever Saul saw anyone who was a warrior or a brave individual, he would conscript him.

Some time later Absalom managed to acquire a chariot and horses, as well as fifty men to serve as his royal guard.

When you come to the land the LORD your God is giving you and take it over and live in it and then say,“ I will select a king like all the nations surrounding me,”you must select without fail a king whom the LORD your God chooses. From among your fellow citizens you must appoint a king– you may not designate a foreigner who is not one of your fellow Israelites.Moreover, he must not accumulate horses for himself or allow the people to return to Egypt to do so, for the LORD has said you must never again return that way.Furthermore, he must not marry many wives lest his affections turn aside, and he must not accumulate much silver and gold.When he sits on his royal throne he must make a copy of this law on a scroll given to him by the Levitical priests.It must be with him constantly and he must read it as long as he lives, so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and observe all the words of this law and these statutes and carry them out.Then he will not exalt himself above his fellow citizens or turn from the commandments to the right or left, and he and his descendants will enjoy many years ruling over his kingdom in Israel.

Now the LORD energized Elijah with power; he tucked his robe into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

Solomon accumulated chariots and horses. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses. He kept them in assigned cities and in Jerusalem.

Now Adonijah, son of David and Haggith, was promoting himself, boasting,“ I will be king!” He managed to acquire chariots and horsemen, as well as fifty men to serve as his royal guard.

He built towers in the desert and dug many cisterns, for he owned many herds in the lowlands and on the plain. He had workers in the fields and vineyards in the hills and in Carmel, for he loved agriculture.Uzziah had an army of skilled warriors trained for battle. They were organized by divisions according to the muster rolls made by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer under the authority of Hananiah, a royal official.The total number of family leaders who led warriors was 2,600.They commanded an army of 307,500 skilled and able warriors who were ready to defend the king against his enemies.Uzziah supplied shields, spears, helmets, breastplates, bows, and slingstones for the entire army.In Jerusalem he made war machines carefully designed to shoot arrows and large stones from the towers and corners of the walls. He became very famous, for he received tremendous support and became powerful.

Solomon did not assign Israelites to these work crews; the Israelites served as his soldiers, attendants, officers, charioteers, and commanders of his chariot forces.These men were also in charge of Solomon’s work projects; there were a total of 550 men who supervised the workers.

The young advisers with whom Rehoboam had grown up said to him,“ Say this to these people who have said to you,‘ Your father made us work hard, but now lighten our burden.’ Say this to them:‘ I am a lot harsher than my father!

“ Your father made us work too hard. Now if you lighten the demands he made and don’t make us work as hard, we will serve you.”
