When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed,“ We have sinned against the Lord.” Now Samuel was serving as leader of Israel at Mizpah.

When the people had come together at Mizpah, they went to the well and got water. They poured it out in front of the Lord. On that day they didn’t eat any food. They admitted they had sinned. They said,“ We’ve sinned against the Lord.” Samuel was serving as the leader of Israel at Mizpah.

So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before the Lord and fasted on that day and said there,“ We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah.

Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a spring of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

Hannah answered,“ No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh.

We have sinned with our fathers. We have committed iniquity. We have done wickedly.

yet if they repent in the land where they are carried captive, and turn again, and make supplication to you in the land of those who carried them captive, saying,‘ We have sinned, and have done perversely; we have dealt wickedly;’

Their heart cried to the Lord. O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night. Give yourself no relief. Lift up your hands toward him for the life of your young children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.

“ Yet even now,” says Yahweh,“ turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.”

Streams of tears run down my eyes, because they don’t observe your law.

I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him,“ Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight.

My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually ask me,“ Where is your God?”

Jehoshaphat was alarmed, and set himself to seek to Yahweh. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

I am weary with my groaning. Every night I flood my bed. I drench my couch with my tears.

As a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.My wounds are loathsome and corrupt because of my foolishness.I am in pain and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long.For my waist is filled with burning. There is no soundness in my flesh.I am faint and severely bruised. I have groaned by reason of the anguish of my heart.

I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.I prayed to Yahweh my God, and made confession, and said,“ Oh, Lord, the great and dreadful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments,we have sinned, and have dealt perversely, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even turning aside from your precepts and from your ordinances.

Now in the twenty- fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, with sackcloth, and dirt on them.The offspring of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.They stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of Yahweh their God a fourth part of the day; and a fourth part they confessed, and worshiped Yahweh their God.

Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying,“ Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.”So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to Yahweh’s word. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across.Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said,“ In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!”The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least.The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying,“ Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water;but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in his hands.Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?”God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn’t do it.

My friends scoff at me. My eyes pour out tears to God,
