When the people had come together at Mizpah, they went to the well and got water. They poured it out in front of the Lord. On that day they didn’t eat any food. They admitted they had sinned. They said,“ We’ve sinned against the Lord.” Samuel was serving as the leader of Israel at Mizpah.

So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before the Lord and fasted on that day and said there,“ We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah.

So they gathered at Mizpah and, in a great ceremony, drew water from a well and poured it out before the Lord. They also went without food all day and confessed that they had sinned against the Lord.( It was at Mizpah that Samuel became Israel’s judge.)

Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But that is not what God desires; rather, he devises ways so that a banished person does not remain banished from him.

Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for the slain of my people.

“ Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied,“ I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord.

We have sinned, even as our ancestors did; we have done wrong and acted wickedly.

and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captors and say,‘ We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly’;

The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord. You walls of Daughter Zion, let your tears flow like a river day and night; give yourself no relief, your eyes no rest.Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint from hunger at every street corner.

“ Even now,” declares the Lord,“ return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”

Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.

I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.

Only acknowledge your guilt— you have rebelled against the Lord your God, you have scattered your favors to foreign gods under every spreading tree, and have not obeyed me,’” declares the Lord.“ Return, faithless people,” declares the Lord,“ for I am your husband. I will choose you— one from a town and two from a clan— and bring you to Zion.

My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long,“ Where is your God?”

Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah.

I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.

There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king,“ The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.”So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.

Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”

“ I am unworthy— how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth.

“ Will you judge them? Will you judge them, son of man? Then confront them with the detestable practices of their ancestors

The Spirit of the Lord came on him, so that he became Israel’s judge and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.

Then, at the evening sacrifice, I rose from my self-abasement, with my tunic and cloak torn, and fell on my knees with my hands spread out to the Lord my Godand prayed:“ I am too ashamed and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.From the days of our ancestors until now, our guilt has been great. Because of our sins, we and our kings and our priests have been subjected to the sword and captivity, to pillage and humiliation at the hand of foreign kings, as it is today.“ But now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been gracious in leaving us a remnant and giving us a firm place in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes and a little relief in our bondage.Though we are slaves, our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness in the sight of the kings of Persia: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.“ But now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have forsaken the commands

And they will go to others and say,‘ I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved.

My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief,

So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.

My eyes fail from weeping, I am in torment within; my heart is poured out on the ground because my people are destroyed, because children and infants faint in the streets of the city.

“‘ But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors— their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me,

After I strayed, I repented; after I came to understand, I beat my breast. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’

Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly.I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning.My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body.I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:“ Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws.

On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads.Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors.They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the Lord their God.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time:“ Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it.Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming,“ Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:“ By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink.But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God;
