They got up early the next morning and after worshiping the LORD, they returned to their home at Ramah. Elkanah had marital relations with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.

So all the elders of Israel gathered together and approached Samuel at Ramah.

There was a man from Ramathaim Zophim, from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah. He was the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

The next morning the people got up early and built an altar there. They offered up burnt sacrifices and token of peace.The Israelites asked,“ Who from all the Israelite tribes has not assembled before the LORD?” They had made a solemn oath that whoever did not assemble before the LORD at Mizpah must certainly be executed.

Elijah then told all the people,“ Approach me.” So all the people approached him. He repaired the altar of the LORD that had been torn down.Then Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of tribes that descended from Jacob, to whom the LORD had said,“ Israel will be your new name.”With the stones he constructed an altar for the LORD. Around the altar he made a trench large enough to contain two seahs of seed.He arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and placed it on the wood.Then he said,“ Fill four water jars and pour the water on the offering and the wood.” When they had done so, he said,“ Do it again.” So they did it again. Then he said,“ Do it a third time.” So they did it a third time.The water flowed down all sides of the altar and filled the trench.When it was time for the evening offering, Elijah the prophet approached the altar and prayed:“ O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, prove today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.

Now David had run away and escaped. He went to Samuel in Ramah and told him everything that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went and stayed at Naioth.It was reported to Saul saying,“ David is at Naioth in Ramah.”So Saul sent messengers to capture David. When they saw a company of prophets prophesying with Samuel standing there as their leader, the spirit of God came upon Saul’s messengers, and they also prophesied.When it was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they prophesied too. So Saul sent messengers a third time, but they also prophesied.Finally Saul himself went to Ramah. When he arrived at the large cistern that is in Secu, he asked,“ Where are Samuel and David?” They said,“ At Naioth in Ramah.”So Saul went to Naioth in Ramah. The Spirit of God came upon him as well, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

The LORD appeared to Abram and said,“ To your descendants I will give this land.” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.Then he moved from there to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and worshiped the LORD.

He built an altar there and named the place El Bethel because there God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

There he set up an altar and called it“ The God of Israel is God.”

So all the people went to Gilgal, where they established Saul as king in the LORD’s presence. They offered up peace offerings there in the LORD’s presence. Saul and all the Israelites were very happy.
