以色列人又行耶和华眼中看为恶的事，耶和华将他们交在非利士人手中四十年。

大卫伸手入囊中，从里面掏出一块石子来，用机弦甩去，击中非利士人的前额，石子进入额内，他就仆倒，面伏于地。这样，大卫用机弦和石子胜了那非利士人，击中了他，把他杀死；大卫手中没有刀。大卫跑去，站在那非利士人身旁，把他的刀从鞘中拔出来，杀死他，用刀割下他的头。非利士众人看见他们的勇士死了，就都逃跑。以色列人和犹大人就起来呐喊，追赶非利士人，直到该和以革伦的城门。被杀的非利士人倒在路上，从沙拉音直到迦特和以革伦。以色列人追赶非利士人回来，抢夺了他们的军营。

扫罗和所有跟随他的百姓都集合，来到战场，看哪，非利士人用刀互相击杀，大大混乱。那先前由四方来跟随非利士人、在他们营中的希伯来人，现在也转过来帮助跟随扫罗和约拿单的以色列人了。那藏在以法莲山区的以色列众人听说非利士人逃跑，就出来紧紧地追击他们。那日，耶和华使以色列人得胜，战争一直打到伯‧亚文。

非利士人攻打以色列。以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，很多人在基利波山被杀仆倒。非利士人紧追扫罗和他的儿子，杀了扫罗的儿子约拿单、亚比拿达、麦基‧舒亚。攻击扫罗的战事激烈，弓箭手追上他，他被弓箭手射中，伤势很重。扫罗吩咐拿他兵器的人说：“你拔出刀来，把我刺死，免得那些未受割礼的人来刺我，凌辱我。”但拿兵器的人不肯，因为他非常惧怕。于是扫罗拿起刀来，伏在刀上。拿兵器的人见扫罗已死，也伏在刀上跟他一起死。这样，扫罗和他三个儿子，与拿他兵器的人，以及他所有的人，都在那日一起死了。住平原那边和约旦河那边的以色列人，见以色列军兵逃跑，扫罗和他儿子都死了，就弃城逃跑。非利士人前来住在其中。

那时撒母耳已经死了，以色列众人为他哀哭，把他葬在他的本城拉玛。扫罗曾在国内驱除招魂的和行巫术的人。非利士人集合，来到书念安营；扫罗集合以色列众人在基利波安营。扫罗看见非利士的军队，就惧怕，心中大大战兢。

扫罗登基的时候年三十岁，作以色列王二年。扫罗从以色列中选出三千人：二千跟随扫罗在密抹和伯特利山区，一千跟随约拿单在便雅悯的基比亚。其余的百姓，扫罗打发他们各自回自己的帐棚去了。约拿单攻击非利士人在迦巴的驻军，非利士人听见了这事。扫罗就在遍地吹角，说：“让希伯来人都听见。”以色列众人听见扫罗攻击非利士的驻军，又听见以色列为非利士人所憎恶，百姓就跟随扫罗，在吉甲集合。非利士人集合，要与以色列人作战。他们有战车三万辆，骑兵六千，士兵像海边的沙那样多。他们上来，在伯‧亚文东边的密抹安营。

约拿单对拿兵器的青年说：“来，我们过去到那些未受割礼之人的驻军那里，或者耶和华为我们施展能力，因为耶和华使人得胜，不在乎人多人少。”拿兵器的对他说：“随你的心意做吧。你上去，看哪，我一定跟随你，与你同心。”约拿单说：“看哪，我们要过去到那些人那里，在他们那里展现我们自己。他们若对我们这么说：‘站住，等我们到你们那里去’，我们就站在原地，不上他们那里去；但他们若这么说：‘上到我们这里来吧’，我们就上去，因为耶和华把他们交在我们手里了。这就是我们的凭据。”二人就让非利士的驻军看见。非利士人说：“看哪，希伯来人从躲藏的洞穴里出来了！”站岗的士兵对约拿单和拿兵器的人说：“上到这里来，我们有一件事要告诉你们。”约拿单就对拿兵器的人说：“跟我上去，因为耶和华把他们交在以色列人手里了。”约拿单手脚并用爬上去，拿兵器的人跟随他。非利士人仆倒在约拿单面前，拿兵器的人跟着他，杀死他们。约拿单和拿兵器的人第一次击杀的约有二十人，都在一亩地的半犁沟之内。于是在军营、在田野、在众百姓中，人心惶惶，驻军和突击队都战兢；地也震动，这是从上帝那里来的惊恐。在便雅悯的基比亚，扫罗的哨兵观看，看哪，非利士全军溃乱，四处乱窜。

看哪，你必怀孕，生一个儿子。不可用剃刀剃他的头，因为这孩子一出母胎就归给上帝作拿细耳人。他必开始拯救以色列脱离非利士人的手。”
