There was no sword in the hand of David.Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron.And the people of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.

Then Saul and all the people who were with him rallied and went into the battle. And behold, every Philistine’s sword was against his fellow, and there was very great confusion.Now the Hebrews who had been with the Philistines before that time and who had gone up with them into the camp, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.Likewise, when all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were fleeing, they too followed hard after them in the battle.So the Lord saved Israel that day. And the battle passed beyond Beth-aven.

Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers.Then Saul said to his armor-bearer,“ Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him.Thus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day together.And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. And the Philistines came and lived in them.

Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had put the mediums and the necromancers out of the land.The Philistines assembled and came and encamped at Shunem. And Saul gathered all Israel, and they encamped at Gilboa.When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly.

Saul lived for one year and then became king, and when he had reigned for two years over Israel,Saul chose three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent home, every man to his tent.Jonathan defeated the garrison of the Philistines that was at Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying,“ Let the Hebrews hear.”And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become a stench to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.And the Philistines mustered to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and troops like the sand on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth-aven.

Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor,“ Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.”And his armor-bearer said to him,“ Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish. Behold, I am with you heart and soul.”Then Jonathan said,“ Behold, we will cross over to the men, and we will show ourselves to them.If they say to us,‘ Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place, and we will not go up to them.But if they say,‘ Come up to us,’ then we will go up, for the Lord has given them into our hand. And this shall be the sign to us.”So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said,“ Look, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.”And the men of the garrison hailed Jonathan and his armor-bearer and said,“ Come up to us, and we will show you a thing.” And Jonathan said to his armor-bearer,“ Come up after me, for the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel.”Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, and his armor-bearer after him. And they fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him.And that first strike, which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made, killed about twenty men within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre of land.And there was a panic in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and even the raiders trembled, the earth quaked, and it became a very great panic.And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude was dispersing here and there.

for behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb, and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”
