以色列人又做耶和華視為惡的事，耶和華就把他們交在非利士人手中四十年。

他從袋裡拿出一塊石子用投石器猛力拋去，石子擊中歌利亞的額頭，嵌了進去，他迎面栽倒在地。大衛就這樣不用刀劍，只用投石器和一塊石子戰勝了那個非利士人，殺死了他。大衛跑到那非利士人身邊，從他刀鞘裡拔出刀殺了他，並割下他的頭顱。非利士人看見自己的英雄死了，紛紛逃跑。以色列人和猶大人乘勢吶喊，追殺非利士人，直追到迦特和以革倫的城門。通往迦特和以革倫的沙拉音大道上到處是非利士人的屍體。以色列軍隊追殺非利士人回來，又擄掠了他們的營地。

他和跟隨他的人聚集起來，衝入戰場，發現非利士人正互相殘殺，亂作一團。從前加入非利士軍隊的希伯來人現在也倒戈加入掃羅和約拿單的以色列軍隊。那些躲在以法蓮山區的以色列人聽說非利士人潰逃，都出來緊緊地追殺他們。耶和華在那天使以色列人大獲全勝，戰事一直蔓延到伯·亞文。

非利士人與以色列人交戰，以色列人敗逃，許多人在基利波山被殺。非利士人窮追掃羅及其眾子，殺了掃羅的兒子約拿單、亞比拿達和麥基舒亞。掃羅周圍戰事激烈，他被弓箭手發現、射成重傷，就對為他拿兵器的人說：「拔出你的刀來刺死我吧，免得那些未受割禮的人來刺殺和凌辱我。」但拿兵器的人非常害怕，不敢動手，掃羅就自己伏刀自盡了。侍從看見掃羅已死，也伏刀自盡了。這樣，掃羅和他三個兒子，以及為他拿兵器的人和他的軍隊都死了。平原一帶和約旦河對面的以色列人見以色列軍敗逃、掃羅及其眾子已死，都棄城而逃。於是，非利士人佔據了那些城邑。

那時撒母耳已經死了，以色列舉國都為他哀悼，把他葬在他的家鄉拉瑪。當時，掃羅把所有占卜和行巫術的都逐出了以色列。非利士人集合起來，在書念紮營，掃羅率領以色列軍隊在基利波紮營。掃羅看見非利士軍隊聲勢浩大，感到膽戰心驚，

掃羅四十歲登基。他在統治以色列的第二年，從以色列人中選出三千人，親自帶領其中的兩千人到密抹和伯特利山，另外一千人和約拿單留在便雅憫境內的基比亞。他把其餘的人遣散回家。約拿單攻打迦巴的非利士駐軍，非利士人聽到了這消息。於是，掃羅在各地吹響號角，通告希伯來人。以色列眾人聽說掃羅攻打非利士人的駐軍，並聽說非利士人對以色列人恨之入骨，便回應掃羅的號召，聚集在吉甲。非利士人調兵遣將，要攻打以色列。他們有三萬輛戰車和六千騎兵，步兵多如海邊的沙。大軍來到伯·亞文以東的密抹，駐紮在那裡。

約拿單對拿兵器的年輕人說：「我們去那些未受割禮之人的軍營，也許耶和華會幫助我們。祂使人得勝不在乎人數多少。」拿兵器的人答道：「就照你的意思，我會一心追隨你。」約拿單說：「我們去他們那邊，故意讓他們發現。如果他們說，『站住，等我們去你們那裡！』我們就待在原地，不去他們那裡。但如果他們說，『你們來我們這裡！』我們就去，因為那表示耶和華已經把他們交在我們手裡了。」非利士的駐軍看見二人走近，就說：「看！希伯來人從洞裡爬出來了！」駐軍對約拿單和拿兵器的人大喊：「上來，我們要教訓教訓你們。」約拿單就對拿兵器的人說：「跟著我爬上去，耶和華已經把他們交在以色列人手裡了。」於是，約拿單就爬上去擊殺非利士人，拿兵器的人緊隨其後。他們首次出擊，殺了約二十個非利士人，屍首倒在半畝大小的地上。營房、田野的所有非利士人，包括駐軍和那些突擊隊都非常恐慌。大地震動，眾人恐懼萬分。掃羅在便雅憫境內基比亞的哨兵看見非利士軍隊四散奔逃，潰不成軍。

你必懷孕生一個兒子，你不可為他剃頭，因為他一出生就要歸給上帝做拿細耳人。他要從非利士人手中拯救以色列人。」
