Samuel then took a large stone and placed it between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshanah. He named it Ebenezer( which means“ the stone of help”), for he said,“ Up to this point the Lord has helped us!”

Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying,“ Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

Joshua also set up another pile of twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, at the place where the priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant were standing. And they are there to this day.

But God has protected me right up to this present time so I can testify to everyone, from the least to the greatest. I teach nothing except what the prophets and Moses said would happen—

Jacob set up a stone pillar to mark the place where God had spoken to him. Then he poured wine over it as an offering to God and anointed the pillar with olive oil.

After the Philistines captured the Ark of God, they took it from the battleground at Ebenezer to the town of Ashdod.

Abraham named the place Yahweh Yireh( which means“ the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb:“ On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a monument.Then he told his family members,“ Gather some stones.” So they gathered stones and piled them in a heap. Then Jacob and Laban sat down beside the pile of stones to eat a covenant meal.To commemorate the event, Laban called the place Jegar sahadutha( which means“ witness pile” in Aramaic), and Jacob called it Galeed( which means“ witness pile” in Hebrew).Then Laban declared,“ This pile of stones will stand as a witness to remind us of the covenant we have made today.” This explains why it was called Galeed—“ Witness Pile.”But it was also called Mizpah( which means“ watchtower”), for Laban said,“ May the Lord keep watch between us to make sure that we keep this covenant when we are out of each other’s sight.If you mistreat my daughters or if you marry other wives, God will see it even if no one else does. He is a witness to this covenant between us.“ See this pile of stones,” Laban continued,“ and see this monument I have set between us.They stand between us as witnesses of our vows. I will never pass this pile of stones to harm you, and you must never pass these stones or this monument to harm me.

Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh Nissi( which means“ the Lord is my banner”).

The next morning Jacob got up very early. He took the stone he had rested his head against, and he set it upright as a memorial pillar. Then he poured olive oil over it.He named that place Bethel( which means“ house of God”), although it was previously called Luz.

And Samuel’s words went out to all the people of Israel. At that time Israel was at war with the Philistines. The Israelite army was camped near Ebenezer, and the Philistines were at Aphek.

“ Listen to me, descendants of Jacob, all you who remain in Israel. I have cared for you since you were born. Yes, I carried you before you were born.I will be your God throughout your lifetime— until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.

Joshua recorded these things in the Book of God’s Instructions. As a reminder of their agreement, he took a huge stone and rolled it beneath the terebinth tree beside the Tabernacle of the Lord.Joshua said to all the people,“ This stone has heard everything the Lord said to us. It will be a witness to testify against you if you go back on your word to God.”

In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the heart of Egypt, and there will be a monument to the Lord at its border.

O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood, and I constantly tell others about the wonderful things you do.

Yes, you have been with me from birth; from my mother’s womb you have cared for me. No wonder I am always praising you!

It was there at Gilgal that Joshua piled up the twelve stones taken from the Jordan River.Then Joshua said to the Israelites,“ In the future your children will ask,‘ What do these stones mean?’Then you can tell them,‘ This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’For the Lord your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until you were all across, just as he did at the Red Sea when he dried it up until we had all crossed over.He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the Lord’s hand is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God forever.”
