Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying,“ Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

Then Samuel got a big stone. He set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer. He said,“ The Lord has helped us every step of the way.”

Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said,“ Till now the Lord has helped us.”

Samuel then took a large stone and placed it between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshanah. He named it Ebenezer( which means“ the stone of help”), for he said,“ Up to this point the Lord has helped us!”

Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it upright between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, explaining,“ The LORD has helped us to this point.”

Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.

But God has helped me to this very day; so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen—

Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it.

After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said,“ On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.He said to his relatives,“ Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap, and they ate there by the heap.Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.Laban said,“ This heap is a witness between you and me today.” That is why it was called Galeed.It was also called Mizpah, because he said,“ May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other.If you mistreat my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me.”Laban also said to Jacob,“ Here is this heap, and here is this pillar I have set up between you and me.This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap and pillar to my side to harm me.

Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner.

Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it.He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.

And Samuel’s word came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek.

“ Listen to me, you descendants of Jacob, all the remnant of the people of Israel, you whom I have upheld since your birth, and have carried since you were born.Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the Lord.“ See!” he said to all the people.“ This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.”

In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the heart of Egypt, and a monument to the Lord at its border.

Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.

From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb. I will ever praise you.

And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan.He said to the Israelites,“ In the future when your descendants ask their parents,‘ What do these stones mean?’tell them,‘ Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.”
