那一天，迦得來見大衛，對他說：“你上去，在耶布斯人亞勞拿的打禾場那裡，為耶和華立一座祭壇。”

以利亞對眾人說：“你們走近我這裡來。”眾人就都走近他面前。他重修已經毀壞了的耶和華的祭壇。以利亞照著雅各子孫支派的數目，拿了十二塊石頭。（耶和華的話曾臨到雅各說：“你的名要叫以色列。”）以利亞奉耶和華的名用這些石頭築了一座壇，在壇的四周挖溝，可容十四公升種籽，然後把柴排好，又把公牛切成塊子，放在柴上，就說：“你們盛滿四桶水，倒在燔祭和柴上。”又說：“倒第二次。”他們就倒第二次；又說：“倒第三次。”他們就倒第三次。水流到祭壇的四周，甚至水溝裡也滿了水。到了獻晚祭的時候，以利亞先知近前來，說：“亞伯拉罕、以撒、以色列的神耶和華，求你今天使人知道你是在以色列中的神，我是你的僕人，又是奉你的命令行這一切事。耶和華啊，求你應允我，應允我！使這民知道你耶和華是神，又知道是你使這民的心再回轉過來的。”於是有耶和華的火降下來，吞滅了燔祭、木柴、石頭和塵土，連溝裡的水也燒乾了。

他說：‘求你讓我去，因為我們的家在城裡有獻祭的事，我哥哥吩咐我去。所以，我若是在你眼前蒙恩，求你讓我離開，看看我的哥哥們。’因此，大衛沒有來赴王的筵席。”

你要為我築一座土壇，把你的燔祭、平安祭和牛羊獻在壇上；在我使人記念我名的地方，我都必到你那裡去賜福你。

撒母耳就牽來一隻還在吃奶的羊羔，把牠作全牲的燔祭獻給耶和華，又為以色列人向耶和華呼求，耶和華就應允他。撒母耳正在獻上燔祭的時候，非利士人前來要與以色列人爭戰。當天，耶和華發出極大的雷聲，攻擊非利士人，使他們潰亂，他們就在以色列人面前被擊敗。於是以色列人從米斯巴出去，追趕非利士人，擊殺他們，直到伯．甲的下邊。撒母耳搬來了一塊石頭，把它豎立在米斯巴和善之間，給這塊石頭起名叫以便以謝，說：“直到現在，耶和華都幫助我們。”這樣，非利士人就被制伏了，不再侵犯以色列的境界。撒母耳在世的日子，耶和華的手一直攻擊非利士人。非利士人從以色列人奪得的城市，自以革倫直到迦特，都歸還以色列人；屬於這些城市的四境，以色列人也從非利士人手中奪回。那時，以色列人和亞摩利人和平相處。撒母耳終生作以色列人的士師。他每年都巡迴伯特利、吉甲和米斯巴，在這些地方治理以色列人。然後，他回到拉瑪，因為他的家在那裡。他也在那裡治理以色列人，並且在那裡為耶和華築了一座祭壇。
