众百姓到了吉甲那里，在耶和华面前拥立扫罗为王，又在耶和华面前献平安祭。扫罗和以色列众人在那里都非常欢喜。

非利士人进攻，以色列人败了，各往自己的家逃跑。被杀的人很多，以色列倒下的步兵有三万。神的约柜被掳去，以利的两个儿子何弗尼、非尼哈也都被杀了。

耶和华也必将你和以色列交在非利士人手里。明日你和你儿子们必与我在一处了；耶和华也必将以色列的军兵交在非利士人手里。”
