今日不是收割小麥的時候嗎？我向耶和華呼求，他就會降下雷雨。這樣你們就會知道並看見你們為自己要求一個王，在耶和華眼中是行了極大的惡事！」

因此我把這一切放在心上，為要察驗這些事：義人、智慧人和他們所做的都在神的手中；那將臨到他們的一切，無論是愛是恨，沒有人知道。每個人的命運都是一樣的：義人與惡人，好人與壞人，潔淨的與不潔淨的，獻祭的與不獻祭的都有一樣的命運。好人怎樣，罪人也怎樣；起誓的怎樣，怕起誓的也怎樣。

全體民眾就到吉甲去，在那裡，在耶和華面前確立掃羅為王；又在那裡，在耶和華面前獻上平安祭。掃羅和以色列眾人就在那裡大大歡慶。

於是非利士人進攻，以色列人被擊敗，各人逃回自己的帳篷。那是一場極大的殺戮，以色列的步兵倒斃了三萬。神的約櫃被奪去，以利的兩個兒子何弗尼和非尼哈也死了。

耶和華必將以色列與你一同交在非利士人手中，明天你和你的兒子們就會與我在一起了；耶和華也必將以色列軍兵交在非利士人手中。」
