現今不是收割麥子的時候嗎？我要向耶和華呼求，他就會打雷降雨，你們就可以知道，又可以看見，你們為自己要求立王的事，在耶和華看來，是行了極大的惡事。”

現在你的王在哪裡？讓他拯救你吧！你所有的領袖在哪裡？讓他們治理你吧！因為論到他們你曾請求：‘把王和領袖賜給我。’我在忿怒中把王賜給你，又在烈怒中把他廢去。

如果你們繼續行惡，你們和你們的王就必一同滅亡。”

我留心這一切事，並加以闡明：就是義人、智慧人和他們所作的，都在神手裡。臨到他們的一切，無論是愛是恨，人都不領悟。眾人的命運都是一樣的：義人與惡人、好人與壞人、潔淨的與不潔淨的、獻祭的與不獻祭的，所遭遇的都是一樣的；好人怎樣，罪人也怎樣；起誓的怎樣，怕起誓的也怎樣。

眾民就都到吉甲去，在那裡在耶和華面前立掃羅為王，又在那裡在耶和華面前獻平安祭。掃羅和以色列眾民都在那裡，非常歡喜。

這樣，掃羅和他的三個兒子，以及他的全家，都一同死了。

於是非利士人起來作戰，以色列人就被擊敗，各人都往自己的帳棚逃跑。這是一場大屠殺，以色列人中有三萬步兵陣亡。神的約櫃也被搶去，以利的兩個兒子何弗尼和非尼哈也死了。

並且耶和華必把以色列和你一起都交在非利士人手裡；明天你和你的兒子們都要和我一起了。耶和華必把以色列的軍隊交在非利士人手裡。”
