此后，大卫求问耶和华说：“我可以上犹大的一个城去吗？”耶和华对他说：“可以上去。”大卫说：“我上哪一个城去呢？”耶和华说：“希伯仑。”

犹大人来，在那里膏大卫作犹大家的王。有人告诉大卫说：“埋葬扫罗的是基列的雅比人。”

于是约书亚为耶孚尼的儿子迦勒祝福，把希伯仑给他为业。所以希伯仑成了基尼洗族耶孚尼的儿子迦勒的产业，直到今日，因为他专心跟从耶和华—以色列的神。希伯仑从前名叫基列‧亚巴；亚巴是亚衲族最尊贵的人。于是国中太平，没有战争了。

押沙龙派密使走遍以色列各支派，说：“你们一听见角声就说：‘押沙龙在希伯仑作王了！’”

扫罗的儿子伊施‧波设听见押尼珥死在希伯仑，手就发软，全以色列也都惊惶。
